Exotic Meats

This thread made me remember and check out the site Exotic Meats. Anyone ever try any of this stuff?

I've eaten buffalo, ostrich, buffalo, alligator, frog legs, gopher (turtle), goat, raccoon, and squirrel. I'm from the South, so I grew up eating a lot of weird stuff. Some of the things they sell I wouldn't even think of as "exotic"...like rabbit and lamb. I'm really wanting to try rattlesnake and kangaroo though. Anyone have any stories, recipes, etc?

Emu is actually the best meat I've ever eaten. I've tried bear, lion, giraffe, alligator, turtle, raccoon rabbit, frog, buffalo, ostrich, kangaroo, snake, goat and cabrito (young goat), blow fish and a variety of game birds (some that can be found in the Americas and some that can't).

Kangaroo sucks and is only sold to tourist (like me) and covered up with every thing imaginable. Try Emu instead. I can't remember what type of snake it was and it may have been eal which I've always enjoyed so I can't offer opinions on that.

Nice. I'm one of those people who will eat and try almost anything. Eel I've always liked in its sushi form and I haven't tried fugu yet but am dying to.

How did you like the raccoon? I'm not a fan. I had it BBQ'd. That type of meat always reminds me of a big rat. :repuke

I draw the line at bald eagles.

Gopher turtles are also illegal to gather from what I understand. So of course I haven't had that in quite a while, because picking one up and taking it home as it crossed the road in front of me would be wrong. And illegal. So of course I wouldn't do that.

I wonder what LION meat tastes like. Aren't there some animals that secrete foul odors that make their meat taste really unpleasant? (Besides the obvious skunk steak, that is).

TurboAngel 04-17-2006 04:23 AM

Well I didn't eat it but I was at a dinner where they had duck feet.:( Everyone seemed to like it but I didn't have the nerve to try it.

I've had the chicken feet before. Not a lot of meat there, but it tastes no different from the rest of the chicken. Mostly just frustrating and a pain in the ass to eat little bits of meat.

You should try the chicken feet. They're pretty tasty and better then pickled pig's feet.

WebairGerard 04-17-2006 10:15 AM

never heard of anyone eating Lions or Giraffes. what do they taste like? (don't say chicken!) :)
