buying a McDonalds...

Odd question but I've always pondered about it...Has anybody ever looked into buying a McDonalds or Wendys, blah blah? I never really see one go out of business so I can imagine with all the money being generated it has to cost a nice hunk to buy one....anybody?

btw,Yes I'm strange

FlyingIguana 05-07-2002 12:46 PM

from porn to flipping burgers. interesting

Babaganoosh 05-07-2002 12:47 PM

Who cares about the money? Just think about being there with nearly unlimited amonts of fries and cheeseburgers! You would be a god in my book.

Hot Tropical Babes 05-07-2002 12:48 PM

we looked into it. its a very good investment. I believe they want you to work with the company a year or so before you buy.

SleazyDream 05-07-2002 12:48 PM

mmmmm... big macs

Gemini 05-07-2002 12:49 PM

My ex and I looked in to it years ago... YOU build the building basically and pay them a yearly franchise. At the time it was 15k per yr. I think they were going to add in a new program where they'd finance the building as well but no doubt it would cost a good bit.

Find a good small town and you could make a fortune with one! :thumbsup

The Truth 05-07-2002 12:50 PM

Back in high school.. 10+ years ago, we did a study about it and the franchise cost was astronomical... something like a quarter mill. It would still be worth it of course. McDonalds is a gold mine.

Onehelluvanoize 05-07-2002 12:52 PM

Of course you haven't seen any Mac going out of business! That's the cool thing of franchising. The sucker that franchises the Mac is the one that carries all the risks.
They can use all the shit of Mac Donalds Corp. (and the name and shit like that) in exchange for a fee and purchase of all the big mac stuff from the corp.

Mr. MacDonalds is the one sitting one his fat ass getting rich without doing a flying fuck for it! (and boy...am I jealous!)

Why quit one job and do another when you'll soon be able to do both at the same time:

I'm going to McDonalds RIGHT now to get the owners name and number off the "sign" :thumbsup ...See what they have to say about it

Sly_RJ 05-07-2002 01:00 PM

In the city I'm from (about 60,000) it would have cost around $650,000 for everything, if I remember correctly. But definitely good investment, I'd rather buy BK, can't stand McDonald's.

playa 05-07-2002 01:00 PM

from what i heard just the application fee is like 6 figures,,,, and you need to like have a multi million dollars worth of assests,,, but if your like a minority then they'll give you a better chance

http://www.mcdonalds.com/corporate/franchise/index.html

Hot Tropical Babes 05-07-2002 01:01 PM

alot of people on here joke about Mc Donalds,, if only they knew LOL it is a fucking gold mine,, but like any business, you have to know what the hell your doing.

ServerGenius 05-07-2002 01:04 PM

Ehh I actually read that Mac Donalds doesn“t really make that
much on franchising.....the money is made on real estate....

They provide the building...you pay a lease by owning a lot of
property and increasing property prices this is were the real
cake is made. Very clever....

The investment is only good if they offer a product that is unique in taste, that would be hard to duplicate.

For instance you could open your own burger joint complete with drive-thru, if it tastes better than mcdonalds, it will probably be a bigger hit at a MUCH Cheaper Cost

All Items must be bought from the Main Company as most have uniform taste standards, ie you eat the same item in Ny and LA they should taste the same.

Franchise and royalty fees are a big fucking joke

Pipecrew 05-07-2002 01:09 PM

250k to buy a tim hortons here and i think a million for a mcdonalds

Every McD's everywhere does taste the same, that's the beauty of it. The consumer KNOWS exactly what they are getting, and that's what they go there to get.

If you buy one nocost, I know where you can find a qualified labor pool ;)

yes but realistically fast food don't work like that,,, consumers don't care bout the taste as much but rather the marketing,,,,
burger king and McDonalds,,, or Pepsi or Coke,,,

they all taste the same its just how they market them and you think you like them more or the other cause the way you see them in commericals,,,

place a blind fold and i'll bet you can't taste the difference,,,

its just all bout perception

HowlingWulf 05-07-2002 01:50 PM

If you really want to know about the evils of franchising a McDonalds, BurgerKing, etc, read 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser. You'll shit a brick and probably never eat at one of those places again.

BTW the failure rate for fast food franchises in the first 5 years is higher than the average small business - it's just that another 'franchisee' pays the fee and takes over the site and nobody knows the difference.

Also the original Mcdonald brothers sold their last remaining stake to Ray Kroc for just under $2 million over 30 years ago. If they held onto it it would be worth over $1 billion today....

Great book.

FlyingIguana 05-07-2002 01:50 PM

don't they want owners to go to hamburger college and run the shit themselves?

if u have over a million bux in assets, why the fuck would u wanna work at a mcdonalds?

hyper 05-07-2002 01:52 PM

if you want to go into franchising i would suggest starbucks or a specialty shop

and if you look at my profile you will see i work for a franchised company, and know exactly the ins and outs of owning and operationg one.

of you really want my opinion of franchises i will gladly tell you why you shouldnt own one

boneprone 05-07-2002 01:54 PM

ive thought avout this too.
I really like the product, and i would like to own one.

I think you have to go to Mcdonald college first before they let you buy a franchise.

oscer 05-07-2002 01:56 PM

I managed for Taco Bell during the days they started buying up their old franchises and thought they'd make better money using mostly corporate stores right through to the period they decided they'd start franchising them all out again.

When they did this 2 brothers from East Texas who started off owning a couple of Taco Bells ended up buying the majority of them in the D/FW and outlying areas...they now own well over 150 Taco Bells in Texas and Louisiana....anyway to get to my point.

The younger brother one day when opening up a new store here in Fort Worth just sighed real heavy and looked at me and said...."If there's a harder way to earn a dime in this world I don't know what it is."

I'll have to say I agree with that 110%.

If you think you are interested at all in owning a fast food resteraunt I suggest you go work in one for couple of months as a min. wager...and you will soon realize this is not what you want to do.

#1 McDonald requires you to actually work in a store before purchasing...you have to know the ins and outs of the biz from sweeping the lots...to making fries...to working the drive-thru all alone.

#2 Your employee pool is limited to kids...mental defects...drug addicts/alcoholics...and this is your management team.

No shit...you will be entering the biz with the highest employee turnover rate.

Just because you are the owner doesn't mean you sit back in your ivory tower and watch them make burgers below while the money just rolls in.

You will have to put in your time and hopefully build up a management team you can trust....but in the mean time you will be dealing with no call no shows...what does that mean?

On a Friday night after the football game and everybody in the neighborhood hits your store a couple of 16 year olds decide they'd rather go to a party...but guess what? They don't call you...and they don't show up.

I had an entire crew of Mexican kids do this to me on a Friday night so they could go to a quinceneara (sp?...It's a mexican celebration of a 15 year old girls birthday).

You will have to deal with teaching people day in and day out that you cannot wipe your nose and then stick your hand in a basket of french fries without washing first.

You will be dealing with theft...money...food...property.

You will be dealing with a public who would politely ask you for your insurance card if you rammed their $50K mercedes but is willing to jump over a counter and throttle you for not putting enough cheese on his 69 cent taco.

You will be dealing with bogus complaints of food poisoning and slip and fall claims...the list goes on.

I suggest you stick with porn...it's a lot easier sitting in a dark little office where your only boss is you :)

nocostporn 05-07-2002 02:26 PM

Did i say I want to run the shit? I would just invest the majority of the money in it and let some other fool run it,I would do the payroll ... Negatives to that?

P-Stringfellow 05-07-2002 02:37 PM

Come to the UK, you can get a McD's for £25000!:Graucho
Jamie

hyper 05-07-2002 02:40 PM

if your not gonna get involved in the business
stick with real estate investment or something.

the corporation will piss you off

FlyingIguana 05-07-2002 02:45 PM

from what i know mcdonalds wants their franchise owners to be heavily involved in the operations. not just sit back and scratch ur balls.

Dude you're fooling yourself if you think that's the way it's done.

In order to own a McDonalds and any other franchise you have to run it....they won't allow it any other way.

You can eventually pay someone to manage it for you...you're dealing with a person who had extensive experience in that biz...I'm just telling you exactly how it's going to be.

But don't listen to me...go ahead and buy your mickey d's and sit back and just issue checks and then come back and tell me how it all worked out :thumbsup

Exactly...the brothers I know who are one of the largest Taco Bell frachise holders in the U.S. still end up on the line making Tacos on really bad days...LOL...especially during new store openings.
