How long till some state or the feds get myspace shut down?

I saw Dateline last nite and they had some cop on there posing as a teenage boy. He claimed it was an experiment to see how much poersonal info he could get on underage girls. Dunno, but that whole type of thing, including the stings some police departments do seem lke entrapment. He didnt actually bust anyone, but he showed three girls' parents what all kind of personal stuff he had on the girls, and showed the girls too. They were shocked as to what all they had divulged. As were the moms. Anyway, with the current administration in Washington, and the way some states, particularly Connecticut (17 assaulted underage girls in that state alone from Myspace) are going after myspace for underage assaults and such, how long before somehow they get the site shut down? I know that no matter what theres gonna be pervs out there looking for underage girls, whethere it be on my space, or yahoo or whatever. But it seems that more and more people are jumping on the myspace hate bandwagon these days. Discuss

Theo 04-10-2006 05:55 AM

do you know who owns myspace now? that alone it a no reply to your post lol

bjjb 04-10-2006 05:58 AM

Yeah I know. But isnt that an incentive for the Bush admin to go after it. lol

candyflip 04-10-2006 05:59 AM

That would be typical of most Americans. Let's blame MySpace, so that we don't have to take responsibilty for fucking up raising our own kids.

madawgz 04-10-2006 06:00 AM

myspace isnt going anywhere...

Pete-KT 04-10-2006 06:01 AM

So for parents raising there kids fucked up, we should blame myspace?

bjjb 04-10-2006 06:03 AM

Im not blaming anyone. But the media hype is getting ridiculous. Even the shitty local stations are running stories here about it and warning parents to keep their kids away from the site.

Theo 04-10-2006 06:03 AM

Newscorp is the no1 loaded weapon of GWB's propaganda. Myspace is a property of newscorp right now. Bush's administration is "picking" targets.

Manowar 04-10-2006 06:08 AM

they will make it private or reg-only or something

But kids are kids. Think of all the stupid things yo9u've done when you were a kid. Some just don't know any better or think logically and it doesn't allows have to do with how they were raised.:2 cents:

SirMoby 04-10-2006 06:51 AM

My space is great for the administration. When little girls get stalked they turn around and can blame Internet porn even though the 2 are not related in any way.

You do have to ask "WTF is a 13 year old doing with a webcam in their room any way"? I'll get my little girl a webcam one day and setup a PC in the living room where she can communicate with friends and relatives where we can see what's going on. She won't get a computer in her room or in any room with a door on it.

Matt 26z 04-10-2006 06:59 AM

People who are assaulted from MySpace.... I'd like to know the full stories behind that. Do they put up personal info and someone comes to their home and rapes them, or do they willingly meet up with a real person on there who ends up hurting them?

I'm sure it's the latter, and that's like blaming a bar because the guy who the girl met there ended up beating her.

The internet is no different than real life, yet most parents seem to think that just because the computer is in the safety of their own home that it's harmless.

Phoenix 04-10-2006 07:11 AM

um myspace was just sold....look who bought it...it aint going anywhere

jjjay 04-10-2006 07:15 AM

it's the story of the month. it will all blow over.

the day myspace gets shut down by the feds is the day Fox News starts supporting the democrats.

seeric 04-10-2006 07:17 AM

myspace cannot get shut down.

have they shut down yahoo mail because stalkers and losers use it for bad?

do they stop selling handguns because people kill with them?

the same thing happened at friendster and with xanga.

myspace is not going anywhere. :2 cents:

btw, i saw that show. the sickos are having a field day on that site.

disgusting.

Australian Mega Billionaire Rupert Murdoch.

His divorce from Anna is the most expensive on record with a $1.7 Billion payout so he could marry one of his young employees Wendi Deng.

It all comes back to the stupid parents, children should not be aloud on the internet without their parents.

This again illustate the need to create a .kids zone ( safe for them ), as such zones exiost in the "non-virtual" world .

So very true :thumbsup I hate the way people are never responsible for their own actions these days, its always somebody elses fault.

Kids shouldn't be on the internet without the supervision on an adult

RawAlex 04-10-2006 08:16 AM

Actually, I was thinking about this the other day:

One of the more interesting ideas I came up with was this: The minors cannot enter into a contract to allow their images to be put online (they cannot enter into a contract until adulthood), without the signature of a parent or guardian. Therefore, most of the images that appear on myspace could be considered "used without permission".

Just like using zoning laws to close adult business, the lawmakers will find a way to make mysapce suffer if they want to.

Alex

Ayla_SquareTurtle 04-10-2006 08:38 AM

I really don't understand the big deal. There are only about 500 billion other ways for the "bad guys" to find innocent people online.

Myspace is being held up to prove the point to the non-internet-savvy (parents) that the internet is an evil and dangerous place. More fear-mongering, etc etc. It's the same as how they teach abstinence instead of sex education: they'll scare parents into taking their kids off the internet entirely instead of teaching them how to use it wisely. One more step closer to control of a society from the top.

bjjb 04-10-2006 01:41 PM

bump for more discussion lol

marketsmart 04-10-2006 01:52 PM

i think people are looking at myspace the wrong way. i think its a great opportunity to round up lots of pedo's. if the govt was smart, they would set up a task force that only handled myspace. they could create a bunch of profiles and try to lure these sick fucks to a set up location. combined with harsher minimum sentences it would not take long to put a large dent in the problem..:2 cents:

Anything on the net will be abused by whoever for whatever purpose.

It's unfortunate myspace has had attention from the media and there is prob a need to change the TOS (perhaps verifiable registration) and have some form of monitoring built into their model.

It's obviously not in the interests of myspace.com to be known as a center for pedos.

Drake 04-10-2006 02:07 PM

I don't use myspace, but if any agencies decided to shut it down, I'd be very concerned. It's a free forum. Some people are going to use it for good and for bad. The best that myspace can do is encourage users to be responsible. The rest is up to parents.

mazdaman 04-10-2006 02:14 PM

i remember msn chat rooms closed down for pedo etc reasons, but that was m/s decsion, i dont see it being shut down one bit, i may see under 18's not being able to use it. but that is all

bdld 04-10-2006 02:14 PM

it will guaranteed not be shut down. they'd have to shut down all the instant messenging systems, chat rooms, message boards, blog hosts, etc as well.

Agree... If the problem is really to the level portrayed in the media, there is stuff any website can do to minimize this - it's the same with any form of abuse.

Pedos are everywhere - they don't need myspace.com to commit offenses, but obviously attracted to locations (web or physical) where children are around. If a website wanted to encourage reporting of suspect activity - simply set up a "Law Office" link to enable staff to check and monitor this if justified.

I'd think any attempt by agencies to close down sites which are operating legally, would be met with some challenges. :)

Somebody tell Rupert that you can get that in the west village for about $300...and you don't have to see her later that night.

Xplicit 04-10-2006 03:08 PM

At the worst they'd just delete every under 18 account.

It seems like the newest social networking sites like EveryonesSpace.com is being smart and making it 18+.

They had a lot more teen chat rooms on Yahoo that Myspace doesn't have..
And the only reason they got shut down was because of advertisers threatening to pull their ads if they didn't remove them..

Wonder why they didn't get the media heat that Myspace is getting..?
