Transfer of soon-to-expire domains impossible?

I've been handling domains for 10 years, but I've never seen this one before:

I guess it makes sense, but is it common practice that they won't let you transfer when the domain expires within a week? Any registrars on GFY that can pull some strings? :) I'd really hate to give the scammers at RegisterFly more business just to keep this batch of domains :disgust

Yep, they can go as far as 30 days actually.

Once it expires you can't do a transfer. Normally there is a 7 day window right before that you can still squeeze one in though. I've not seen a company say you can't transfer though within those 7 days. If you don't make it the transfer will just come back as failed.

Correctamundo. Some even go out further I've heard. Safe bet is to make sure you have 60 days+ to minimize grief.
