They've launched the Maids [PICS]
 

Today they launched the Maid of the Mist tour boat fleet at Niagara Falls, marking the (un)official start of the 2006 summer tour season.

So I headed down to my favorite vantage point (a 'closed to the public' restricted area on hydro station property grounds at river level) and got some shots.

Today wasn't bad, the breeze was blowin' towards the U.S. side...so the mist stayed away. But usually down in that area it can get fairly soggy at times.

a good friend of mine is the captain on that there boat..his family runs it

youd be suprised at how many dead bodies they fish out of there

I know a few of the guys who work the boats myself. I've heard a lot of stories. A lot of the suicides get trapped under the bottom of the Falls by the undertow and sometimes remain there for a long time.

I've found two bodies myself in the whirlpool eddies in the past few years while shooting down in the gorge. They get caught in the whirlpool current near the shore on the Canadian side a few hundred yards from the helicopter pad.

They ain't a pretty sight, that's for damn sure.

Both times I didn't have my cellphone and had to hike to the top of the gorge to use the phone at the golf course nearby to call Niagara cops. And then hike back down to show'em the location.
