Scouting photoshoot locations [PICS]

Once again we were out and about looking for new locations to use for photoshoots.

Today we checked out two separate abandoned psychiatric hospitals including a 100-yr-old abandoned mental facility, consisting of a few dozen separate buildings all linked underground by steam tunnels. Took a few background shots to get an idea of how the place looks.

Rather creepy - in the past it was home to violent mental patients...and the place has a long history of hauntings (if you believe that stuff). We explored all the ancient steam tunnels, visited the morgue in the basement of one building...and checked out the powerstation building.

A few shots:

Google "urban exploration" - there's a lot of sites out there catering to exploring old abandonments all over the place.

But I also spend time driving around looking for places myself, and I have a network of buddies we share good locations with. Quite often I'm among the first people (in southern Ontario) to check out a location shortly after it becomes abandoned or derelict.

Much appreciate the generous compliments. I'm humbled.

Some folks get all excited when a new stripclub opens down the street from their house. I get all giddy when I hear about a hospital or old factory closing somewhere locally. :1orglaugh

Looks that way, but its just the timing of the shot. She actually loves explorin' abandonments. I gave her my old P&S digital cam and she had a blast takin' her own pics all afternoon.

She's a very gifted artist, and looks at old places from an artistic perspective.

tony286 04-05-2006 09:25 PM

very cool looking areas if you get caught shooting in them is it trepassing?

Some places yes, some not. That psych hospital is wide open, no security patrols and the owner doesn't live in the same city.

A few of the places we go are risky, though. But trespassing is only a $100 ticket max. - just a misdemeanor. I'd just write it off as a business expense. :winkwink:

sniperwolf 04-05-2006 10:02 PM

wow.. creepy place you get yourself into... would be fun to have shootings there

PixeLs 04-05-2006 10:04 PM

Pete-KT 04-05-2006 10:39 PM

We have an asylum thats been abonded for 40 years its over 200 years old but they wont allow anyone in it, i would love to get in there and get pics but there is always a security guard and they are knocking it down soon:( they already colapsoed the tunnels that were under it.

wargames 04-05-2006 10:45 PM

thanks for the nightmares im gonna have tonight :thumbsup

emthree 04-05-2006 10:48 PM

From what I hear, Detroit's a real mecca for urban exploration and photography - a LOT of abandonments in the area.

Just across the river from you in Windsor is a hospital that closed a short while back - Grace Deux. It was an awesome location for a shoot until they boarded it up solid.

As for security guards, quite often I'll social engineer my way in to a place if I'm really ambitious to get pics. Sometimes a cordial chat with a guard will get me inside for a short while if I play my cards right.

Just shooting there.

We lease a 30k sq. ft. old factory/warehouse during the summer months to use as studio space, though. 100-years old and really decrepit inside...it looks great in pics.

tristan_D 04-06-2006 12:41 AM

I'm getting goosebumps from those pics.

Mutt 04-06-2006 06:05 AM

there's a website out there dedicated to photography of old abandoned mental institutions - creepy and powerful - 'if these walls could talk' or scream!

really nice stuff - quantum-x also shoots abandoned plants and factories.

georgeyw 04-06-2006 06:43 AM

call me a chicken shit - but there's no way you'd get me inside that place. Unless I was armed to the hilt!

Basic_man 04-06-2006 06:47 AM

XX_RydeR 04-06-2006 06:57 AM

Those were shot in two locations, Whitby Psychiatric Hospital (half-hour drive east of Toronto), and Picton Heights Psychiatric (Prince Edward County near Trenton, Ontario).

We're a 4-hour drive away here in the Falls.

I shot the hospital in Windsor last summer, but ran in to some...well, complications when the owner unexpectedly showed up. Long story, heh.

I wouldn't mind checkin' out the old psych hospital you mentioned, though. Especially if they're rippin' the place down shortly.

LBBV 04-06-2006 09:35 AM

Those pics remind me of something you would see in the game "Doom"...in fact, they would be perfect for one of the first person alien type video games!

Very eerie pics for sure...

FilthyRob 04-06-2006 09:37 AM

that is one scary fucking place!

Were coming out to Niagara Falls April 29th for the day, maybe you got some free time to show us around?

James-AR 04-06-2006 09:53 AM

Any other time would be good, but unfortunately that's the weekend we're up north opening the trailer at the campgrounds.

Not really. I always have my camera gear and tripods with me, and cops are generally cool with photography. Usually I make the initiative to walk over and talk with cops if they're in the area - best defense is a good offense I always say. Show them you've got nothing to hide and that you're just there takin' a few pics.

Generally if you don't look like a punk kid with a spray can and crowbar, police aren't a hassle. They're mostly concerned with vandals and kids looking to trash the place.

Helps to have a good gift of gab. I can usually talk my way out of any predicament. I've even had two cops ask for business cards, lol.
