Sony Slips PS3 Price
French VP drops the big news.
by Gerry Block

April 5, 2006 - The word is out. Yesterday, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe George Fornay let the PS3's European price slip. According to Fornay, the PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euros. That translates to between $613 and $736 for us in the States.

Sony has been saying that the PS3 will be expensive for months now, and Fornay followed up his blunder by insisting that these price points are a quality deal for a Blu-ray player. Nevertheless, all previous attempts at selling videogame consoles at this price point have been rather dramatic failures, even when the systems incorporated 'new' multimedia features.

There may be some hope for lower price points in America. The European market generally gets screwed in consumer electronics, like the $299 iPod selling in Europe for 299?euros. That's a huge difference. Will we see the PS3 launch in the States at $499? Let's hope so, or else we'll be looking at the 360 to carry the industry for the next 5 years.

All systems that were highly anticipated till the prices were announced.

GatorB 04-05-2006 01:57 PM

Now way it's $600. I'm not buying it for that much. I'll get a XBOX 360 and wait until the price drops in 2 years. I'll be shocked if it's over $499.

DavieVegas 04-05-2006 02:01 PM

ps3 will be $500 in the USA. End of story. and yes ill pay that.

Pornwolf 04-05-2006 02:02 PM

I think it will be around $399 to $499 here. It will get snapped up faster than a McRib in Texas.

Lace 04-05-2006 02:03 PM

I'll stick with my 360....That was even outrageous at $450 with the 2yr warranty..

SomeCreep 04-05-2006 02:04 PM

Nope, wouldnt even pay $1, unless I was going to resell it of course, because I dont play those games.

Jakke PNG 04-05-2006 02:12 PM

Sure. Why not? It's not *THAT* much money, and It's gonna be a cool machine.

gecko 04-05-2006 03:52 PM

I would have a probllem with it

Vitasoy 04-06-2006 04:14 AM

I wouldn't have a problem either

Ross 04-06-2006 04:24 AM

I'd pay that if its as good as it sounds.

dissipate 04-06-2006 04:28 AM

No way in hell i'm paying more than $300 for a console gaming system. It's not a matter of having the money, its the damned principle of it.

yea, no kidding, it's just a video game, I don't see how a grown man could piss away $600 on that...

the real magoo 04-06-2006 04:57 AM

I´m happy with my xbox360, thank you very much :thumbsup

Matt_WildCash 04-06-2006 05:02 AM

It will still sell out world wide, they can't produce enough of them at the start while production heats up and people will buy it at the inflated price no matter what just to get one. I'll probably pick one up only if it has some special new games on it though that are not on Xbox 360. I'm sure the ps3 will drop in price when there supply catches up with demand.

I have the 360 and HighDef 60inch plazma hooked up to a xbox 360 it FREAKING ROCKS, the 360 alone is a 2 generation jump over the old Xbox/ps2, I'm hard to impress and I was very impressed with the 360's graphics & games. If the 360 isn't hooked up to highdef tv though its nothing much different to the normal xbox just some new games and a little better graphics but Highdef tv's just bring out a whole new world of gaming. And Xbox live is pretty cool too just don't count on the damn Xbox wireless card to work out of the box.

Theo 04-06-2006 05:05 AM

ppl will buy it thanks to their CCs

BlackCrayon 04-06-2006 05:10 AM

i wasn't even willing to pay what it cost for a ps2 when they came out. maybe im getting older but the more complicated and complex these consoles become the less interested i find myself. soon you'll need to grow a couple more arms to use all the bottons on the controller.

xclusive 04-06-2006 05:17 AM

not until it's proven to be worth it, SONY is a hype machine that hardly ever lives up to what is expected.

Manowar 04-06-2006 06:04 AM

thats stupid

Spunky 04-06-2006 06:05 AM

No way..over priced dust collector

candyflip 04-06-2006 07:28 AM

Gamers care about having a game console, not a Blu-ray DVD player.

The games are going to be on Blu-ray discs so it's kind of necessary.

People were just smarter about their purchases back then is all. Those systems failed because they tried to much, to soon. Had people gone for those systems like they do today then who knows how much gaming would cost now. Maybe it is because I have been watching and playing since Nintendo was popular, the first time, maybe it is because I saw the trend of testing and testing what the market will bear but I just find it silly to rush out and give in to the tests.

Here is my video game memory lane..... Remember how Sega started packaging with no second controller and no game, we bought it anyway? Remember how Nintendo started putting out a new system every 5 years or so and killed off the old one after never really putting out a lot of games, we still bought it? Remember how Sony released the PSX with double the price of anything we had seen before but had a peice of shit laser reader, we still bought it? Remember Sega came out with the dreamcast knowing it was in trouble, spent way to much on advertising and then flopped? Remember how Sony then released the PS2 and it also had a shit laser (DISK READ ERROR ANYONE), well some of you bought it, I waited. Remember Microsoft came out with a system AFTER the PS2 that barely could prove its superiority while making you buy a remote just to play DVD which was standard on the competition's machine and will not play some DVDs. And the whopper, I mean the one that takes the cake. Microsoft releases a system that they KNEW would crash just like they did with Win98 and still you buy.

If the consumers would wake up instead of staying up to be the first in line to buy up the crap they are throwing you then the market would be controlled. I don't care how much money I have, not going to play into their game, be the first on the block to buy it, then watch as within a year or so the price cuts in half? I don't think so. I will be happy to just play it at your house for free.........

MasterSEO 04-06-2006 08:02 AM

if have i have money.. why not.. :)

polle54 04-06-2006 08:03 AM

I am so glad I don't like to play

Doctor Dre 04-06-2006 08:05 AM

Personally I got a gamecube... cauz I almost never play and the only games I wanted to play were marios game. So chances are that i might get teh revolution

JerseyPuma 04-06-2006 08:48 AM

I will pay it in a second. The 360 game selection is some weak shit right now, I have always preferred PS2 games over Xbox games. And Blue Ray DVD is looking to be the solution for HD DVDs, so I will need one anyway.

No Brainer, I will be on the pre-order list for the PS3.

Slick 04-06-2006 08:51 AM

I'll definately be buying one, even if it was $1000. I'm a gamer and I have to have everything :)

The thing is that if anyone here wants to get a FREE PS3, I have the solution for you. Head over to EBGames.com, GameStop.com and Wal-Mart.com or wherever, sign up for their pre-order newsletters OR if those stores are in your area, keep hounding them about a pre-order date. Once they start taking pre-orders, order one IMMEDIATELY to be one of the first in line. Do this at 3 stores and wait :)

Once the systems come out in November (right before Christmas), I'm sure there's gonna be a big shortage in them with the high demand, so you can keep one for yourself and sell the other 2 on Ebay to those that weren't bright enough to pre-order it and make enough money to pay for your system and also to buy yourself a couple extra games.

LittleSassy 04-06-2006 09:22 AM

id definitely buy one too....

Screaming 04-06-2006 09:31 AM

Im thinking about running the preorder scam and getting like 10.

I predict the same panic that xbox 360s went through. The mark up will be great.

Even if it dont happen (and I see no reason why it won't) I can always resell them on ebay at price and not lose anything.

You might want to consider this. Think of how much you would have made if you had 10 360s in your closet during the 1st shortage.

Still waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than a gaming computer

StacyS 04-06-2006 10:31 AM

Not a chance I dont much like video games and that is riduculous, I coudl buy so many other things. Sephora anyone?

WebairGerard 04-06-2006 11:11 AM

I won't, but I am sure some will. The price will eventually fall. I heard Nintendo's new system may start out really low like $199 or even $99 and try to clean up against all the high priced systems. I will be getting the Nintendo just to check out the new controllers which look like a great change in gaming.

If you continue that history lesson though...

A little company called nintendo was supposed to come out with CD-based gaming system that was going to be made by another little company named SONY. 3DO crashed not because of price but because it sucked...So nintendo decided to scrap development and make ANOTHER cartridge based gaming system called Nintendo 64...

...Which left Sony with some dumb CD-base gaming system called ...ummm, Playstation i think it was?

The rest is history :thumbsup

buddyjuf 04-06-2006 11:42 AM

I'll pay it, but I think any price above 500$US is foolish

Sosa 04-06-2006 11:54 AM

I thought I seen yesterday they said after the euro conversion it was $499 US. Either way, $500 or $600 I will be buying.

andrej_NDC 04-06-2006 12:04 PM

Its worth every penny of that, with those specs even a PC would be more expensive.

Pornwolf 04-06-2006 12:08 PM

I'm going to buy it. It will be the first game system I've owned since 2001. I know this is going to be the best made game system to come out in quite a while. Plus it's probably going to be a helluva HD addition to anyones home entertainment system.

Luc 04-06-2006 12:44 PM

i think i'll just hookup my NES back to the plasma and enjoy Super Mario Brothers 3.

Thats true.

And if you consider the original XBOX a sucess story think about how HP/Compaq, Dell and every other CPU maker is kicking themselves right now for not getting an original piece of the pie.

northboy 04-06-2006 12:47 PM

well if it was like 650 us, that would be over 750 canadian, considering Blu-Ray players will be expensive when they come out anyways, I'd probably buy it.

NoCarrier 04-06-2006 12:48 PM

Why are people whining? That's the price of a very good video card on a PC.
