Why would buying the same car in the USA or in Canada be so different?

so I went on BMW.com and BMW.ca to build myself a brand new M3 and see how much it costs

on the US website, it will cost me 67000$US which is equal to 78000$CAD
on the Canadian website, it will cost me 96000$US

does anybody have any idea why? Are these companies still using 1.5 as the exchange rate in order to rack in much more money?

s9ann0 04-01-2006 08:47 PM

try to build one on the UK website for a laugh and see how hard we get ripped off

Might be interesting to contact them both and see how they justify the difference..

Krille 04-01-2006 10:33 PM

how much is it in mexico?

Pure Evil 04-01-2006 10:35 PM

it has to do with taxes and regulations and shit. u canucks are getting screwed

xclusive 04-01-2006 10:36 PM

that's crazy, I could understand a few extra k but that's nuts

Ecksent 04-01-2006 10:41 PM

It's all about the duties and taxes. GST and PST. Remember, the States don't have all that shit. Duty is a revenue source for Canada, it's not for the States.

Why would the Canadian government be taxing them so much.

Would they rather thier citizens by cars from Canadian owned Companies, are there even any?

Dildozer 04-01-2006 10:51 PM

Dude we're getting assfucked in many aspects in Canada, pisses me off when i see how much people paid for the Z in the states and the price i paid.

Checkout the 19inch rim upgrade price on bmw.ca on the m3...... $7k! does anyone get this upgrade? for 7k you can get some pretty sick after market rims and have change over.

Triple 6 04-02-2006 12:11 AM

m3 is yummy.....

although... im hoping to get an m6 sooon :)

Morgan 04-02-2006 12:33 AM

96k??? thats more than i paid for my M5! lol

Morgan 04-02-2006 12:38 AM

btw... dont get an M3 yet. you'll kick yourself in the ass. The NEW M3 will have the 400HP V8.

they should be paying people to take the 07' M3's off their hands!!!

4Pics 04-02-2006 12:40 AM

The M5 is better!

better than M3, yes of course.

better than M6, to each his own.

M5 and M6 are basically the same thing besides the body style. Of course the M6 will weigh 300 lbs less.

same engine, same tranny, same susp.

Personally, i like to have a sedan, so i got the M5. Also, I didnt want to deal with the M6 waiting list. M6's are going for 20k+ over MSRP.

SmokeyTheBear 04-02-2006 01:23 AM

Stop moaning spanno! :winkwink:

If you were here in Costa Rica you'd be paying around 105% taxes (tho there are workarounds on that).

Anyways... there ain't no point in a prestige lump of metal here - the roads would knock the hell out of it in 12 months. Best vehicle is probably an UK ex-army landrover - gotta cost the best part of $2000 (without the chrome rims) :1orglaugh

Steen2 04-02-2006 03:22 AM

Perhaps larger market demand in the US?

Think of gas ... it continues going up let's say at the same % as the US... but the increase should have been absorbed by the increase of our currebncy..

Same here with wine from Europe .. and there was a " mini-scandal" about trying to keep the prices as high...

When our currency falled, eveything went up ... But it seems that want went up doesn't necessarely come down....

Isn't it the same with other products? Try Dell.com and Dell.ca for example.

Lol. Stop whining.
a new m3 convertible is 141 000 CAD in finland.

I don't understand how everyone in north america isn't driving good cars.

me neither

Pornwolf 04-02-2006 12:49 PM

Compared to other countries we definitely buy more luxury cars. There's no doubt about that. After all, people had to put spinners on something.

Sami 04-02-2006 02:53 PM

Bdjuf, I noticed that too.

So simply just buy the car from the US and import it in yourself..

Because at 96,000 you still have to pay 17% tax. 14% for gst pst and 3 % luxury tax.

importing a car from us you will pay 20% tax from what i've heard anyways (about to find out in 21 days ).

You still save quite bit of money.

tranza 04-02-2006 03:57 PM

An M3 costs around US$300,000 here in Brazil.
