they want a $5,000 deposit, but bids start at around $1,500. anyone have experience with this?

Make sure you know the local laws. Some states you get a lien and some states you get the property. Sort of an important distinction.

In most states you get a lien against the property and the orginal owner has "X" days to pay it off with intrest to you. If they dont, you get the property. Either way, you make money.
