Sure you can.

I have mine set up to defrag the pagefiles and registry on startup, the rest gets defragged every 6th month or so, I always forget to leave it on defrag during night.

Jade^ 03-30-2006 07:35 AM

Jace 03-30-2006 05:29 PM

never

and I just want to point out, that those running xpsp2 shouldn't do it too much, it can actually hurt the drive to defrag too much

i never have defragged and I never have troubles

minusonebit 03-30-2006 06:07 PM

Once in a while. When things start fucking up or slowing down.

How so?I have never heard of that before

woj 03-30-2006 09:28 PM

every few months, as long as you always keep a lot of free space on the drive it takes a whlie for files to get fragmented...

well, for one it stresses the hard drive and shortens the life...

as for running xp, here is a good explanation as to why you don't have to do it as much

Quote:

Even though NTFS is more resistant to fragmentation than FAT, it can and does still fragment. The reason NTFS is less prone to fragmentation is that it makes intelligent choices about where to store file data on the disk. NTFS reserves space for the expansion of the Master File Table, reducing fragmentation of its structures. In contrast to FAT's first-come, first-served method, NTFS's method of writing files minimizes, but does not eliminate, the problem of file fragmentation on NTFS volumes
there is NO reason to defrag every day, or even every month....i would say if you are addicted to it, do it every 3-6 months

Probono 03-30-2006 09:56 PM

I read this with interest. In my days using Windows I defragged monthly. I have had a MAC three years. I bought a MAC defrag program out of habit I have tried it twice and twice in three years it told be I was less than 1% fragmented. So it's been three years since i ran defrag and aside from upgrades to OSX I have not had to mess with the OS once.

I am the same way with xp though, I haven't defragged in years, in fact probably about 6 years...since the last time I ran windows 98...I never have to mess with my OS and I rarely have OS troubles, in fact I can't remember the last time XP gave me any trouble at all

Spunky 03-30-2006 10:08 PM

I tend to download and try many programs before I buy.I delete most of them and was told defrag often for a more stable system

je_rome 03-30-2006 10:40 PM

i have a scheduled defrag once in a month or as the need arises

Playa-Deak 03-30-2006 10:56 PM

/hmmm, had this comp for over a yr.. Have never defragged... Finna do it now though.. Thnx for the reminder... :thumbsup
