Cologroup and Candid are two different hosting companies.

Its like McDonalds and Burger King.

MetaformX 05-03-2002 05:06 PM

the real difference is cologroup and cobalt are using Cogent, which is very cheap bandwidth

candid does not use Cogent, and therefore is more expensive

teadrinker 05-03-2002 05:38 PM

is Cogent acctually slower then the other stuff? if not why dont candid and every other company buy from cogent?

yes, cogent is slower
I dunno what the exact reason is why candid doesnt use cogent....
but it prolyl has to do with them believeing that cogent is not as reliable as what they are using....
there has been alot of threads here about cogent...but alot of people do not like cogent, mainly because overall it has really helped lower the price for bandwidth, and therfore hurt the bottom line of some hosting companies because they have to compete with cogent.

some people also say cogent is not gonna be here in a year from now...that their just losing too much money...but cisco has a big stake in cogent, and I don't believe their going anywhere....at least not for a while

it just depends on who you talk to....if you want the absolute cheapest bandwidth, go with cogent. They are the best buy right now, in my opinion

The companies that use Cogent are all newbie companies. Like that do not have very much staff and use cheap servers and stuff. So you pay for what you get basically.

I cant say too much about Candid, beside the few things that I do know. They own there own data center and Cogent is not available to that data center. So that may explain why they dont have it.

Cologroup's uses a telco-nuetral facility where we have multiple providers available to us. By not owning our own data center, we are able to cut our costs by quite a bit and also focus on our core services dedicated servers, server collocation, and virtual hosting. Another, difference is Cologroup manufactures servers, which basically means, I get my servers for a lot less than our competition.

Cologroup's focus is getting the best value possible for webmasters and adult businesses. Although we have had many providers we could choose from , when we factored in price and service, we decided that Cogent offers the best bang for the buck to adult industry. I have had no network issues this year that took sites offline. The only problem I have had this year was over the past couple days with our virtual hosting setup, which was fixed today.

We have been listening to what the adult community has been saying and we recognize that the market needs a high end solution as well for mission critical sites. I have spent the past 3 months researching a multi-homed solution for customers that want the best price for ultimate speed and bullet proof relaibility. This should give Candid some more direct competition aside from just price.

We are launching our multi-homed services next Friday, when you'll be able to check our web site for prices. The multi-homed solutions selects the best route available from 5 providers -> Verio, Level3, Cogent, XO, and Genuity. This service is already in place, tested, and it is incredible how well it works. I am doing the best I can to keep this service below a $1.00/Gig, but I will not have a definate price until next week.

This should give you some information on the two of our companies, but it would probably be good for Candid to speak for themselves. Thanks for listening.

That's BULLSHIT.
Moose is using cogent for his TGP specials and whatnot, and he's far from being a newbie. And I've heard nothing but glowing praise for Moose and Evan in regards to tech support.

You get what you pay for to a certain extent, but that doesn't always mean you get more just because you paid more.
Ever been car shopping? Notice that one dealer is willing to sell you the exact same make and model for $1K less than another? Does that mean if you pay the extra $1K to buy the car from the first dealer that you're getting a better car?

If cogent goes under tomorrow, it'll take my host all of 5 minutes to plug my box into another pipe and my sites will keep on humming. If that happens then I'll have to pay the same price for bandwidth that you do, but until then why wouldn't I want to take that savings and add it to the bottom line every month?

As long as your host has a back up plan (and every host should have a back up plan for EVERY provider, not just for cogent) then I see no reason not to use it.

That's fantastic! I have been looking for that at a decent price for a while. If what you are saying is true (which I have no reason not to beleive it is) my next server will be with your company!
