SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkeness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

perhaps a better idea would be to give breathalizors to drivers as they exit the bars parking lot. i have no problem with that and i dont think anyone else would either.

wtf i was just thinking that .. heh because in texas alot of my friends drive a little drunk because if they walk they get arrested for drunk in public , but you almost never get pulled over.

yep. a friend who lives in texas told me about this earlier today and mentioned that drunk driving fatalities are up a lot this year.

A friend of mine actually took the test in texas a few years back ( they let you do it from home, they mail you a videotape to watch , then you do the test on the internet as you watch the video , its timed )

Laws like that aren't uncommon - it's illegal to be drunk in a pub in England.

I do have a problem with that. are you going to have your packages check against your reciept as you leave the mall parking lot to make sure you did not steal anything??? give then 1 billionth of an inch, and they will take every mile they can get.

What they need to do, is get the cops on the streets doing thier jobs, and making the DUI arrests. But they dont do it, because they dont like all the paper work.

Last time I checked - people do get drunk at bars. But it's rediculous how some bartenders will keep serving intoxicated patrons just to make a few more bucks.
