is it legal to fortify your homes surroundings?

via permits and such.. and if you owned all the property..
would most local town laws have some gay bullshit law preventing you to do so?

i'm talking about if I wanted to lets say, build a 20ft. secure steel fence surrounding my house that went 5 feet into the ground, so it would stand 15 ft. tall at ground level. razor wire all around on top. 500 pound hydraulic rolling fence for the entranceway.

have a watch tower in one of the front corners and constant lights scanning the property.

fuck, let's even throw in a small security team that stood around my house 24/7

wonder how fast until you would be questioned about your intentions by some law enforcement agency or be put on some watch list.

sandman! 03-26-2006 03:21 PM

most places have laws that will prohibit such things.

nofx 03-26-2006 03:23 PM

guess i couldnt do it in amerikkka

i'd have to move to a 3rd world country

detoxed 03-26-2006 03:23 PM

Yeah most places have building codes that limit sizes of fences and additions to houses must fit in with the neighborhood. So no, go out in some county and do it on a few acres of your own property, it wouldnt be much of a problem, just be sure to have lots of ammo and food and water and generators and gas in case they surround you.

MattO 03-26-2006 03:24 PM

Once it was built it wouldn't really matter if it was illegal.

nofx 03-26-2006 03:25 PM

valid point

it would take a lot of cash to have a company do a job such as that "under the table" with no permits or ok's from the city...

but money talks

Check your local zoning laws.

My wife and I looked at some investment properties a couple of months back and one of the places we looked at was located in a housing subdivision. There's no master plan or restrictive covenants for houses in that subdivision. So it wasn't surprising to see one of the houses had 20 foot walls and looked like a desert imperial fortress from Star Wars. Kinda reiterated the need for zoning laws.:1orglaugh

You'll never keep me out anyway....I will get you! muhahahaha

ricks 03-26-2006 03:28 PM

If somebody cuts themselves on the razor wire, sadly you could be liable.

jimthefiend 03-26-2006 03:28 PM

Nothing wrong with fences and wire. It's when you start using mines that you get into trouble. LOL

they would have to tunnel 5 feet under my fence to serve me the papers.

I hope a vietcong doesnt hurt himself, i'd be in trouble. :(

KRL 03-26-2006 03:32 PM

Building codes in most metro cities regulate all that.

I built a deeper and higher than normal custom full perimeter iron fence once. The way I justitfied it to the inspector was showing him videos of how high my German Shepherds could jump and scale a regular height fence. My building contractor got hit with some extra fees I had to pay, but we got it ok'd no problem.

MikeVega 03-26-2006 03:46 PM

I don't think I could get away with a plan like yours but I could build a 6 foot wall with a foot or two of Iron spikes on top I could also have a heavy gate and a guard. A lot of houses have that by me ..

The Heron 03-26-2006 03:49 PM

Depends entirely where you live, pretty easy to do extreme stuff if you own lots of property that's not downtown.

BV 03-26-2006 04:07 PM

Where I live now you can only have a 4' tall fence in front of your house and it has to be 50% see thru) The sides and back are limited to 6'.

Luckily I have an extensive agricultural & horticultural background so I said the hell with a fence and chose to plant Silverthorn hedges (Elaeagnus). I planted them a year ago and they are already over 6 feet tall. In a couple more years they will be 15' + and virtually impenetrable, even a car.

Webby 03-26-2006 04:08 PM

Sheesh.. it's good to be free and do what the hell you like on your own property

Not really. Its horrendous without zoning laws. Here in the Philippines there are some older parts of Manila where you see houses right next to a cement plant right next to a meat packing facility. If the stink and pollution doesn't get you, the traffic will. Zoning laws, while seemingly arbitrary and petty to some are an absolute necessity in this day and age.

The need for zoning laws? What need could that possibly be? You think its OK in a free society for neighbors to rule your roost in addition to their own?

If you want to live in a prison, just go out and shoot someone and then call 911 after he is dead.

Seriously, you can do this kinda shit out in the country but not in the city.

I was thinking more along the lines of once you had your home fortified you'd hunker down and say "come get me, fuckers!"

Well, check my other posts above. No zoning laws spawn a lot more problems than without zoning laws

Antonio 03-26-2006 04:49 PM

Forget those fences - you just need a few of those:

Just make sure to have enough ammo an experienced operator. Or add some image recognition for fully automatic security and that little extra thrill when getting back to your house... :1orglaugh

hey there, any pics of the hedge? I've always been a fan of hedges over big ugly fences. It sounds like they grow pretty fast, therefore is there alot of maintainance involved with trimming them to keep shape?

cheers Matt

I don't have any pics of mine yet but that link U-bob posted is the same thing. I chose it because they are very salt tolerant and I live right on the ICW.

Another type that grows fast and tall is Sweet Viburnum

They actually grow even faster. I planted some of these to make some privacy around my patio. They are already over 8' tall and close to 6' thick.

Unfortunately all these require pruning at least once or twice a year if you want the natural look. If you want that boxed look like in that first link u-bob posted, then that requires more frequent pruning with some of those electric hedge clippers.

But i agree with you, most fences look like crap.

if you show it - someone will rob it.

I like sutble security;

graage has transulaent glass on it for light only

bullet proof glass on all the windows.

reenforced doors with shatterproof glass that cant be kicked in but don't look it.

massive alarm system with armed guard service that shows up in under 10 mins

video security

motion detector lights around the yard - some time delayed so lights go on in the house - and one to a red turning light on a time delay so it looks like cops are comming.

fog machine with voice command that says "30 seconds till poison gas release" then fogs the room. (note the video security - it's mostly to film this)

several tazors and handcuffs in case they DO get in so you can have fun with them in the basement

and if all else fails one adreline rushed Jman with a shotgun with salt shells protecting Skufty who'll be hiding under the bed.

but if you look at the house from the street it looks like EVERY other house on the street

SmokeyTheBear 03-26-2006 10:29 PM

no need to be a prisoner in your own yard.. build your own house , build an underground "panic room" in your house.. it serves the same purpose and wont get you in trouble with the local laws..

kmanrox 03-26-2006 11:32 PM

my milk is fortified and nobody says shit to me... you should be OK
