Why do people act differently on boards and in person?

I don't quite get it. What's the point? Is it a self-confidence booster? Do they need to trash people and act tough online to feel good about themselves?

It reminds me of the second grade "bully" who always picked on the first graders because he was too much of a pussy to push someone his own size around. He did it because he needed to feel good about himself, he needed somebody to think he was special. I was the idiot second grade bully who found a first grader to push around. I was small, he was smaller. I acted out for attention, so people thought I was "cool". Fortunately it didn't last long and I got over it.

Man I would love to hear what a psychologist thinks of this. Is it really "just a joke" and "for fun" like the board bullies often pawn it off as? Or are they really acting out for attention?

My thought is: if you're going to be an asshole, be an asshole. If you're going to be a nice guy, be a nice guy. Being both only leads to people talking behind your back, which defeats the purpose of having multi-personalities to begin with, doesn't it?

Jakke PNG 03-26-2006 12:23 PM

I am fucking thin in real life. I just act all fattie on boards.

Spunky 03-26-2006 12:24 PM

Probably builds confidence and the machismo factor comes in

polish_aristocrat 03-26-2006 12:25 PM

are you referring mainly to Franck or Sleazy, or just in general?

:upsidedow

Libertine 03-26-2006 12:26 PM

It's very simple, really. People on boards don't seem like "real" people, they're just lines of text, so it's easy to be more rude to them than you would be to real people. In real life, however, people have a face, a voice, a body - they're real. And with real people, the social codes that didn't apply to lines of text kick in.

SilentKnight 03-26-2006 12:27 PM

'Cuz in real life, we can just reach out and poke'm in the eye.

kmanrox 03-26-2006 12:28 PM

i dont, do i?

It could be anybody. I've never met Franck. I've met Sleazy.

I don't really understand what he's trying to accomplish with all of this board crap. I've met him numerous times, and he is a nice guy, but the minute he has a computer in front of him he calls people out and is calling them idiots but then in person he's all nicey nice to the same damn person. That makes no sense. If you think someone is an idiot and you're going to call them on it, be a man and stick with your convictions instead of hiding behind the "oh its just fun" charade.

I guess I just don't "get it".

MediaGuy 03-26-2006 12:42 PM

i'll come up with a different name maybe but why?

i'll do as I say on the boards... i'm my own sig whore

i dont it get either, good that you asked it, because if i asked, he would have just called me idiot ;-)

Basic_man 03-26-2006 12:46 PM

It's because some people think they rule the world with their keyboard..

WarChild 03-26-2006 12:47 PM

I'm pretty much a dick in person and on the boards. I make it a rule to not say things online that I wouldn't say to somebody's face. That doesn't really elimate much though. :P

czarina 03-26-2006 12:47 PM

because most people who bitch you out here don't have the guts to do it in person

Pornwolf 03-26-2006 12:47 PM

How a person acts on the board reflects who he is inside. If a person is bieng crazy on the board he can say it's "just an act" all he wants but the truth is that it's really a reflection of a part of that person. It may not be 100% that person, but even if it's 25% of that person it says a lot about him.

Theo 03-26-2006 12:48 PM

post some names

madawgz 03-26-2006 12:50 PM

sonofsam 03-26-2006 12:51 PM

I think that's retarded... i'm the exact same in person

Holly 03-26-2006 12:52 PM

I never swear in real life (except with a few close friends), but on the internet I love to cuss like a fishwife. :1orglaugh

Dagwolf 03-26-2006 12:52 PM

You don't get paid for page views in real life.

I would agree with you if the people never met face to face, but they do.

MediaGuy 03-26-2006 01:03 PM

in real life i'm a skinny geekboy retard but on the boards i'm a he-man of absolute proportions - can't you tell?

u-Bob 03-26-2006 01:07 PM

in the real world, you can like the person but not what they say

on the internet, all you've got to go on is what they say

Nothing to do with multiple personalities. Generally the rules of conduct are different in different places and the internet is the wild west. Or was.

buddyjuf 03-26-2006 01:17 PM

Im actually a big macho guy in real life

and I only own 1 pair of shoes

After Shock Media 03-26-2006 01:20 PM

Only difference between how I act on the boards and how I am in person is that in person I do not speak as much, I am often fairly quiet.

AaronM 03-26-2006 01:22 PM

Sly, I can't speak for others but I can tell you that I act the same way in person as I do on the boards.......BUT.....In person, you usually do not have to deal with the same number of idiots and trolls that are on these message boards. Because of this....You read my aggressive tone more here than you will see in person unless you happen to be one of the few worthless pieces of shit who actually attends industry events. Most of the time the people who talk shit to me on the boards and attend the shows end up lurking in the shadows instead of having the sack to step up and say the same shit in person.

People are cowards.....And most of them are jealous cowards at that.

Fuck em. :2 cents:

MediaGuy 03-26-2006 01:38 PM

dudes can't you tell who's legit?

the guy who'll tell you who he is on theboards is the guy - fucking zipit on the rest...

Questions like this are going to become more complex as time grows. With the internet growing as fast as it is. People don't need face to face people skills anymore.

This mouthy? Expressing my opinion? I have no problem expressing my opinion when I want to.

European Lee 03-26-2006 02:47 PM

Ive never understood that myself, im an asshole on the boards and an even bigger asshole in person.

If you cant be who you are on the boards, whats the point?

Regards,

Lee

CDSmith 03-26-2006 02:55 PM

For others, the anonymity and remoteness allows them to cock off at those they would otherwise never dream of cocking off at in person.

For me, I'm exactly the same whether I'm posting or talking in person.

I say nothing on here that I wouldn't say directly to someone.

Btw you're all fags. :D

Most of them are just keyboard warriors and their testicles are so small they can't step up in person. You know who you are.

Me. I try to get along with eveyrbody. For the most part people are ok, even the posers, you just have to look thru it. Some are just a waste of oxygen.
