Film on Cuban link to JFK's death to air on CBC

Could be an interesting perspective ... It airs on Canadian TV. Doesn't seem like it is playing in the USA ...

controversial documentary that sets out to prove that President John F. Kennedy's assassination was the result of a Cuban conspiracy will air on CBC's The Passionate Eye on Sunday.

Rendezvous with Death: JFK & the Cuban Connection is a German documentary written by Gus Russo and award-winning filmmaker Wilfried Huismann.

The filmmakers interviewed Cuban secret service agents, FBI and CIA operatives and unearthed files from the Mexican government in a three-year investigation.

The documentary claims the Kennedy assassination was an operation run by the Cuban secret service G2 and that a disturbed leftist, Lee Harvey Oswald, was contracted to carry out their plans.

Former Secretary of State Alexander Haig says in the film that President Lyndon B. Johnson believed Cuba was to blame and decided not to tell the American people because he feared a swing to the right that would keep the Democrats out of power for a long time.

Huismann's film was shown on German TV in January. At the time, Huisman said that no U.S. distributor wanted to touch the documentary because the JFK assassination is "taboo" in the U.S.

The film's thesis was so controversial that Cuban President Fidel Castro denounced Rendezvous with Death on Cuban TV, describing it as a "purely commissioned work" of the CIA.

The documentary claims that Castro and Kennedy had made repeated attempts to assassinate one another after the failed U.S. invasion at Bay of Pigs, and that Castro succeeded.

Havana's official Granma newspaper dismissed the documentary, saying it was the latest chapter in the long history of efforts "to annihilate the Cuban revolution.''

Many JFK historians and experts on the conspiracy theories that surround the president's death also disagree with the conclusions drawn in the documentary.

Mel Ayton, author of the 2002 book The JFK Assassination: Dispelling the Myths, says the Warren Commission, which investigated JFK's murder, concluded Castro had nothing to do with the president's assassination after sending an investigator to Cuba to probe Cuban complicity.

A writer in Germany's der Spiegel also questioned whether Huismann's documentary succeeds in proving its thesis.

"None of Huismann's witnesses were involved in the supposed operation," Klaus Wiegrefe wrote. "What Huismann has freshly cobbled together raises a lot of questions - which will have to be answered before anyone rewrites history."

Rendezvous with Death: JFK and the Cuban Connection airs Sunday at 10 p.m. EST/PST on CBC-TV and Sunday at 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. EST/PST on CBC Newsworld.
