You can't count (proof!)

Just try and count how many times the ball is passed between the white team. You'll probably be wrong:

DO NOT SCROLL DOWN BEFORE TRYING IT

About 50% of people actually fail to see that there is a guy in a gorilla suit walking across the screen and thumping his chest until they are told about it. If you are among them, watch the vid again and this time, look for the gorilla.

Libertine 03-23-2006 03:16 PM

Oh, and for those of you who like flying, in a related experiment, when experienced pilots were put in a simulator and asked to virtually land a plane, in their routine practices they failed to notice the Boeing 747 that was parked across the runway :Oh crap

Here's some info on the gorilla:

WTF dude? You never said I was supposed to look for a gorilla. I was supposed to count ball passage.

That's the whole point. When people are focused on certain things, they tend to oversee other really, really big things. I know of one example where people don't notice the Notre Dame dancing around in a video :Oh crap

This has serious implications though. For example, people on highways tend to not notice it when a car somewhere in front of them is standing still and crash into it (the reason police in most places now park sideways to block the road after an accident - people do notice the lack of tail lights on the object in front of them, because that is what they are looking at).

sickkittens 03-23-2006 03:34 PM

Yeah, but how many people noticed the naked chick?

Head_Hunter 03-23-2006 03:35 PM

Wow i missed the gorilla the first time :Oh crap

Verbal 03-23-2006 03:37 PM

very, very interesting ... thanks for the post. I did notice the gorilla, however only a brief glimpse. Didn't see her walking in or out of the scene.

Good Post. Very Intereting stuff. :thumbsup I did not see the gorilla

Stamen 03-23-2006 03:39 PM

I saw it, I didn't scroll down first and I was like "wtf is a gorilla doing there?"

volante 03-23-2006 04:50 PM

I've experienced something similar to this when giving a statement to police about a robbery I witnessed. Four people were involved and they made their escape in a car, but rather than remembering all of them I made a note of the car's license plate and concentrated on just one of the cars occupants. I got the license plate correct and (according to what I was told later) gave a perfect description of one of the occupants, right down to the jewelry he was wearing. Then I was asked where he was sitting in the car. I had no idea. I was concentrating so hard on what he looked like I didn't even notice that he was the driver...
