Have you gone on a cruise? And if so....

...what was the longest cruise you ever took?

I'm looking at the Holland-America cruises for 2007, and I notice their Grand World Cruise (105 days) is only $33K for the largest staterooms. I remember looking at the brochure for that same cruise back in '93-94 and it was like $80K.

Anyone ever taken a world cruise?

And before anyone says "I wouldn't want to be on a ship that long"... the cruise is riddled with overland tours off-ship, in tons of countries. You're off the ship a lot in that time.

I'm too scared to go on a cruise because of the way viruses and shit stick around on boats. :/

LauraLee 03-22-2006 07:45 AM

Actually i remember reading about world cruises costing about 80k as well. By comparison is makes the 33k seem reasonable.
Given the chance, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 03-22-2006 07:45 AM

i have not been on one yet either. I would like to one day.

Stallion 03-22-2006 07:46 AM

never taken a world cruise. but sounds interesting.

Abithefiend 03-22-2006 07:46 AM

I went on a booze cruise with my karate group years ago and ended up puking on myself.
Went on a cruise round the Greek Islands few years back too..that was fun.

iggysick 03-22-2006 07:49 AM

Never been on cruise but I doubt I could stay more than a month on see. I was working on one island for like a year or so and got sick of looking at all that water all around :1orglaugh

I can imagine. That's another cruise I've closely looked at.

MickeyG 03-22-2006 07:50 AM

I've been on several short cruises, 3days, 5, days etc. Great times but I cant imagine spending 100 days on board

What about 2-3 weeks?

And as I said, you're not on board the whole time.

Furious_Male 03-22-2006 08:28 AM

Wow that would be amazing. I just did my first cruise last month (7 days). Already booked another 7 day for next year I loved it.

At this point in my life I could never be gone that long for a world wide tour. To many business and family obligations but hell if I didn't have those I would be all for it.

Where to?

Hitting a few ports in the Caribbean then through the Panama Canal and up the coast of Mexico would be a great cruise.

And that one that goes up the Amazon river would be quite the experience.

Western Caribbean. Bahamas, Grand Caymans (loved that), and Costa Maya out of Ft Ldl.

January 07 we are doing the Caymans again, Jamaicca, and Cozumel out of Miami.

I would love to do the Panama canal as well. 08 we are going to shoot for a more extensive cruise.

Theo 03-22-2006 08:57 AM

many many times, but not anything close to that long. This one is almost 4 months and due to business this one is prohibited dream lol

imageman 03-22-2006 09:05 AM

Ive done 3 short cruises all about 10 days and that was long enough for me. The $33K is a good price but check out their tips rules if its 105 days long expect to pay $10,500 worth of tips out !!!!!!!!

that would be awesome. i would see if you can take the same ship on a short cruise first though. who wants to get stuck on a ship for 100 days thats anything less than perfect?

seeric 03-22-2006 09:27 AM

i went on one to grand cayman and cozumel. it was 5 days. was a blast. i would do one of those world cruises in a second.

grumpy 03-22-2006 09:33 AM

Looks good. Im for sure gonna book the discovery trip in Jan 2007. Thanks for the great idea!! :thumbsup

betsy 03-22-2006 09:36 AM

i went on a 5 night cruise on royal carribean... oh man did it suck! I was with my inlaws, stuck on a giant boat (i have a big boat phobia) with nothing to do, crowds everywhere, cruise ship ppl trying to get me to buy crap, nasty food... blah.

Each cruise ship in the Holland America fleet provides an Internet Center offering 24-hour email and Internet access. Printers are also available. Wireless "hot spots" (802.11b) are available on all ships for guests traveling with personal laptop computers with wireless capability. Guests may also rent wireless-equipped laptops onboard.
No excuse not to go :winkwink:

d_train 03-22-2006 07:33 PM

I've never been. I'm looking forward to cruising the Carribbean someday

actually, the internet on those ships is like 50 cents to $1 per minute

minusonebit 03-22-2006 07:43 PM

I took a 3 day cruise once. It was a blast.

While a world cruise would be unforgetable, I couldnt be away for that long, I would spend too much time worrying about what was going to hell while I was off having fun.

Kevsh 03-22-2006 07:49 PM

1) You better hope the chef is good
2) You better hope a hip hop band doesn't take the room beside or above yours
3) You better be sure you can get wireless access
4) You better be sure to get medical coverage
5) You better be sure you love whomever goes with you

Besides those concerns, I'm sure it would be the trip of a lifetime! I'd do it.

quiet 03-22-2006 07:51 PM

longest (and only) cruise was two weeks in hawaii and mexico. i took my parents, and while initially not very excited about it, ended up having a GREAT time. total blast. there you go.

PMdave 03-22-2006 07:55 PM

Did the Nile Cruise twice and it was fun (educational fun however).

NoWhErE 03-22-2006 07:55 PM

I spent 6 months straight on a cruise ship and was PAID for it.

But thats because I was their onboard jeweler :P

I would think the people who take that kind of cruise wouldn't have a problem tipping well for world-class 5-star service.

The chefS on those ships are all in league with the finest in the world.

I would think the cruise line is smart enough to pre-plan to prevent such annoyances from occuring.

you can.

That advice applies to any trip out of the country.

Agreed in full on that. What a nightmare it would be to find out in week 2 that your girlfriend is really a total bitch/shrew/harpie who won't shut up about the least little thing, and have to face the remainder of the 105 days together. You'd have to sit by and watch upwards of $50k-$60K total being flushed down the toilet.

Attaboy. So would I. Hopefully within the next 10 years, actually.

Vasago Reno 03-23-2006 08:22 AM

I would need some high speed internet or I would get bored as fuck

Peaches 03-23-2006 02:46 PM

Too long away from home for me (I'm a homebody). I've been on a 7 day cruise and could possibly take a 14 day one, but that would be my personal limit. Looks like a GREAT deal though!!

sicone 03-23-2006 02:48 PM

Never taken a world cruise, but have taken 4 different 7 day ones. Cant wait for the next one.
