My new hypoallergenic siberian kitten! (PICS)

Just picked him up yesterday from the airport...

This breed is considered hypoallergenic. So far so good... the whole time I've had him I've played with him put him up to my face and he even slept on my pillow! Only 1 sneeze so far when I wasn't even with him... and no other signs of allergies!

Here's a blurb on them from a breeders website http://www.siberiancat.net/

HYPO-ALLERGENIC CATS: After many years of breeding Siberians and having many people visiting my home, I started to notice that people with cat allergies could tolerate the Siberian. I myself am allergic to cats and I have no problems with them. Some Siberian breeders have thought that the Siberians may have reduced cat allergens called FEL D1. This allergen is extremely potent. Secretions from the glands of the skin are the primary source of FEL D1, but it is also deposited on the fur through the saliva when they clean themselves. Eventually the allergen flakes off and becomes airborne to trigger the symptoms that characterize allergies to cats. No major scientific test has been run on the Siberians to this date. Just through many years of experience I have placed kittens in homes of people who have never been able to own a cat before!! If possible it is best to visit a Siberian in person. I have been breeding Siberians since 1994 and I may know of one in your area.

tony286 03-21-2006 09:34 PM

my wife wants one but 750 dollars for a cat

King Adam 03-21-2006 09:47 PM

They are really hypoallergenic????

I love cats but could never have one since they caused me breathing problems Plus, I have scorpions here in the desert and a cat would be a huge help. My two dogs just try to eat the scorpions .. not good.

You have a very cute cat. It's my first time to know about this "hypoallerginic" cat.

From what I've read yeah, I didn't have the luxury of being able to see one in person... so I had the breeder send me a little bit of fur of the mother & father (probably pulled from a grooming brush)

then i rubbed it through my hands and touched my eyes / nose with it and had no reaction... then i even went so far as to put the actual fur onto my face and around my nose and eyes... still no reaction :)

Cute breed with very long whiskers.. :)

Amazing .. I thought the only cat you could get that wouldn't affect my allergies is one of them skin, no fur cats. That kinda freaks me out.

Sammy4u 03-21-2006 11:37 PM

Super cute kitty. Looks alot like a Siamese, are they related?

czarina 03-21-2006 11:37 PM

Not sure, it was brought to the US from Russia...

it may look related because of the seal point coloring... but they also come in tabbys and other color combos

I think you'd still be allergic to that cat... I'm sure they lick themselves like any other cat does too... then the protein in their saliva would flake off and get airborne and ur screwed

LexiLexxx 03-21-2006 11:45 PM

OMG, How cute!!!

I have allergies but no from animals, I read about these new kitty's.

Congrats!!!

$750 - ouch.

I remember when leopard cats first hit the market in the late 90s. We saw one in Toronto @ $1000 each.

And back then they still only had short life expectancies...just a few years. Still hadn't worked out the quirky genetics.

aww! that is so cute! :)

Cyndalie 03-22-2006 08:41 AM

Cute Kitty!
Unless the cat is dander-free it's not really possible for it to be "hypo-allergenic", however I have 2 devon rex cats that are also tolerable to cat allergic people. The reason is the type of fur, which may be a feature of this breed as well. They basically have mutated to only grow 2 of the 3 types of fur found on most cats. They do not have the long "guide hairs" that spread the dander in the air, keeping it trapped close to their body. Devons do not have much fur the first 2-3 years of their life. I'm suprise about these little guys, I'll have to do more research because my eyes go nuts around regular cats. I love kitties!!!
