soft boxes or umbrellas?
 
Hello, tomorrow i am buying a beginners studio light kit. 2 x 300 w/s strobes. i have an option to get 2 x 40" umbrellas (silver & white), 1 umbrell & 1 20x20" softbox, or 2 softboxes... plus stands and some other stuff... i have no idea, i am a beginner.. can someone help point me in the right direction? whats better: softboxes or umbrellas, or both? thank you!

I would recommend the umbrellas. The umbrellas are compact, quick and easy to set up and provide soft beautiful illumination. 20" softboxes are not very big and the light will not be as soft as the umbrellas (IMO). If your shooting content, I'd recommend the umbrellas.

I'd definately go 1 umbrella and 1 softbox, both throw different light and both are needed at different times, often together- IMO

im going to go w/ the umbrellas and buy some larger softboxes when i can afford a big one.. the size in the kit i was looking at is pretty small.. thanks for all the advice!

I have a 2000W studio light that I use in a big softbox for outdoor shoots sometimes... probably visible from space it's so bright
