TEFLON - question
WTF is up with teflon , i have been hearing stuff for years about how dangerous it is , they are always coming up with some new study showing how dangerous ( cancerous ) it is. Now i hear they have found def links between teflon and cancer , so they plan on "phasing" it out by 2015 ? um wtf

yes it is dangerous. In fact you are not supposed to have bird anywhere near your kitchen because they are especially vulnerable. the real danger comes in 2 forms. Using METAL utensils on it thus scraping the Teflon off and cooking on high heat. Too high heat and the smoke your burnt food create will probably contain poisonous chemicals. So basically use plastic utensils and don't cooker higher than Med heat at most.

I just saw a story a week or two ago on the news about them getting rid of it (in the US, at least).
I believe it mentioned something about the temperature that you heat it up to. Higher temperatures for longer periods are supposed to be bad and let off more of the toxic gasses. When they did studies, rats and mice who were exposed to whatever the chemical/gas is, developed brain tumors. All of which is really lovely, as my father (who has eaten food from Teflon pans probably every day since he and my mom were married) is currently dying from a brain tumor at 55 years old. Just one more thing to make you wonder. |
yeah the bird story is true, teflon isnt that ok, keep in mind to throw out anything covered in teflon thats chipping.

its really frustrating when i hear things like this. Everyone ( except dupont ) basically knows this stuff is toxic , but no recall and its still being sold.
Well i guess its no worse than tobacco or alcohol but.. i dont get much of a thrill from teflon. certainly not enough to risk brain tumours or some shit.. |

Cooking with lard/greese/etc is likely worse than cooking with teflon. As long as you don't use super high heat, you'll be fine. Read directions, pick your poison.

the most known use is to recover the fright pans. It makes that food doesnt stick in the pan. I also used to in some electric devices as isolator and chemical indutry to recober containers, pipes, pumps, ect. It's used a lot because it's really stable, resitent and non-reactive. with higth temperatures it degrades, but i think you must raise temperature a lot. also i dont think you will have any diseae with one pan... you will need over expose to flames lot of pans I made a seach in internet and i found this Safety While Teflon itself is chemically inert and non-toxic, Teflon begins to deteriorate after the temperature of cookware reaches about 500 °F (260 °C), and begins to significantly decompose above 660 °F (350 °C). These degredation products can be lethal to small birds, and can cause flu-like symptoms in humans. By comparison, cooking fats, oils and butter will begin to scorch and smoke at about 392 °F (200 °C), and meat is usually fried between 400?450 °F (200?230 °C), but empty cookware can exceed this temperature if left unattended on a hot burner. Over the 40 years non-stick cookware has been in widespread use, there is only one published case of a minor, short-lasting health effect linked to overheating non-stick cookware.[1] The EPA's scientific advisory board found in 2005 that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical compound used to make Teflon, is a "likely carcinogen." This finding was part of a draft report [2] that has yet to be made final. DuPont settled for $300 million in 2004 a lawsuit filed by residents near its manufacturing plant in Ohio and West Virginia based on groundwater pollution from this chemical. Currently this chemical is not regulated by the EPA. In January 2006, DuPont, the only company that manufactures PFOA in the US, has agreed to eliminate releases of the chemical from its manufacturing plants by 2015, but did not commit to completely phasing out its use of the chemical. This agreement is said to apply to not only Teflon used in cookware but in other products such as food packaging, clothing and carpeting. DuPont also stated that it cannot produce Teflon without the use of the chemical PFOA, although it is looking for a substitute. It is noteworthy that PFOA is not part of the finished product of nonstick cookware or bakeware. It is only used during the manufacture of the product and only a trace amount of PFOA remains after the curing process. There should be no measurable amount of PFOA on a finished pan, provided that it has been properly cured. |

You are paranoid man. Most high grade teflon pots or pans do not chip or peel. Then everyone should know not to heat them to hot empty or bake in them. Other than that they are safe. If you wish to throw everything out in your house that may cause cancer we can compile one hell of a list for you. |

Cast iron cooks better anyways. Let him do what he wants. Actually BAKING in teflon would be safer because most people bake things under 400 degrees and definately under 500 degrees. I suggest if you buy teflon pans don't be cheap and buy the low cost wal-mart on sale crap. Buy the good stuff. And cook no higher than med to just under medium high. And don't leave the pan empty sitting on the stove while the burner is on. Teflon skillets are good because they have temperature settings on them. Still nothing beats good old cast iron. And if the iron flakes off at least that's good for you. |

I cook with metal/iron frying pans/woks/whatnot with no wokkers at all. Add oil + butter shit don't stick, piece of piss to clean and you can seal them (season) by lightly frying up rock salt inthem and whiping clean with paper towel.
What cracks me up the most is those teflon pans with the red dot in the middle, when it glows or some shit it means time to cook. Either people are turning mentaly challanged these days or they don't realise smoke pissing of the pan means it's hot. :) -N |
