Need Medical Forum (mom very ill)

I've been looking around for hours. As a last resort, I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. My mother has extremely bad osteoporosis, among other related issues. Although she goes private, medical treatment in the UK for her problem is very bad. We do not have the doctors or the necessary equipment.

I'm looking for a forum in the U.S for osteoporosis sufferers. This is in the hopes that I can get in contact with or be refered to people who can help. If anyone knows of such a forum or a good medical forum, please post it here so I can take a look.

Cheers. :)

I just did a research paper on this and my grandmother had it and my mother's bone scan shows she has it (so I'll probably have it too). Here's a good site I found:

I'm sorry to hear that. That good news is that you are aware and informed, which can make the world of difference. Thanks for the link!

women start losing bone calcium at the onset of their menses... its has to do with how they are replacing it in the young years.. ie coffee leaks calcium from bones.. and same with pregnacy.. if its not replaced.. you lose it.. and bones cells are not replaced accordingly.

sadly... little can be done

Osteoporosis is one of the most common and well-studied conditions in elderly women. I can't imagine there's no proper treatment for this in the UK - or at least it's no worse than anywhere else in the world. My guess is that you've had too large a share of sales talk from commercial private clinics in the US.

I dont think that webmd.com has a forum, but I have not been to the site in some time. Did you try google, and maybe some of the large hospital sites in the US right across the border from where you are?

Thanks for the links so far, folks!

Rhesus, it's a fact that UK medical services (even private) are inadequate. The doctors themselves would be the first to agree. It comes down to allocation of funds. 1/3 of women and 1/8 of men will get osteoporosis at some stage in their life (not necessarily in old age either). Yet in the UK breast cancer, for instance, which is more rare, gets 49 times the funding.

pornguy, I've been googling for hours. Have passed on much to my parents.

Without going into too much detail (would take me hours / days to explain it all) she has other health issues. Taken as a whole, no one doctor / specialist is adequate for all her problems. And, yet, each doctor must work in conjunction, so as not to give her treatment that would have adverse affects with regard her competing problems.

Today's experience with her specialist (who's a research scientist and not adept at dealing with people) has left her wanting to seek alternative medical help. So I'm just basically trying to do my part to help out.

This is a group dedicated to hip resurfacing. Most surface hippies need new hips
due to OA. I'm sure the people there can give links/advice.
