Needed this done the other day, I hit up the hosting guy (webair) and they optimized it for me. It is only one file (my.cnf), I believe, that needs to be edited.

just increase max connections allowed, and the default is 8M memory size. should be at least 64m

It sounds like he needs someone to help him with it...i'm sure if he knew more specifically what the problem was then he'd have said so.

With MySQL, you do not normally touch the server settings unless you know precisely what is it that you're trying to achieve. "Finetuning" a server is a very uncommon operation. If there is a performance problem chances are it has something to do with the database structure and the way the client application makes queries and as such, thus the first thing to be done is consulting with a competent developer, not a system administrator.

The fact you refused to interpret my "sql5" as "mysql5" displays you are not constructive towards my 'issue'. Actually you're quite annoying although i appreciate your attempts for clarification.

Saying sql5 shows your ignorance rather than his. There is no such thing as sql5. SQL is a general language, MySQL is a specific implementation of it.
Why would he readily interpret it as MySQL? There's a crapload of DB servers for freebsd.

nah, i'm just saying that you shouldn't slam him for interpreting it incorrectly. He had a good guess that it was mysql5 but you went out all hostile on him AFTER he gave you quite a sound advice. I'd actually consider his advice before/after tuning your server.. it may be an application issue

But you're right.. i could have been an application issue.. it could have been a hardware issue.. but from my first post it should have been quite obvious im a clueless moron and i need someone to check THAT out..

He is actually right, most of the time problems are due to poorly designed db tables or inefficient coding.

This is kinda like looking into the engine or transmission because the car is "slow " when really the problem is the driver. If you put an old lady in a race car, it won't go very fast no matter how much you tune the car.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but "issues" is simply not a valid description of a problem. It is an equivalent of "my website doesnt work". How do you know you have a problem? How does it express itself? What did you change prior when the problem appeared? I can't help you unless you give me something to work with. Seriously, you can't just expect to post about "issues" and have a flock of mind-readers fix your DB problems with the power of a thought.
