Celebrity pictures on the net copyright?

Does anybody know if there are any copyright issues with posting images of celebrities on your website?

I have seen the same images posted on different websites. Are these pictures considered to be in the public domain and are thus thought to be fair use?

Your point? Unlike you, maybe I have a life and don't spend every day on GFY reading every single thread.

I was going to give you a straight answer, but now I'm not.

If it's posted on a website then most likely:

            a) They own copyright... and you don't.

            or

            b) They've stolen it from the rightful copyright owners... by using it you're doing the same.

I distinctly remember xpays coming on GFY a week or two ago and demanding that people take his celeb pics of Paris Hilton down unless they were promoting his program. Apparently, there IS a celebrity picture copyright for certain celeb photos. I'm not sure if all of them are, but some are for sure.

                    Indeed!

                    Let's rephrase the question to:

What are the consequences to posting celeb pics? Either posed or paparazzi?

A number of coporate sites such as FHM, Playboy, Vanity Fair, and a number of others prohibit reposting exclusive content without permission.

I can only recall 1 photographer who took action against sites posting his work: The Janet Jackson nude sunbathing clip.

So, as far as I'm concerned, pictures posted of celebs in the paparazzi vein would be fair game, although illegal.

Just be prepared for legal action.
