How hard is it to learn assembly language?

I have to take a couple classes of this and I'm not looking forward to it.

The hardest language to learn but once you know it, you can do just about anything.

Napolean 03-13-2006 06:47 PM

its just a little bit easier than coding in straight binary.. have fun :)

I will probably have to take it more than once :( I'm debating whether to take it soon or take it last.... This maybe the hardest class I ever have.

but only on one type of processor?

^ What they said ^

There's different instruction sets for different processors, but any way you slice it, its not something you can learn quickly or painlessly.

Take it sooner rather than later :2 cents:

It's not to bad once you get into it. I mean, I did a lot of pen testing which required knowledge of asm, but i never did anything such as driver development ... asm is generally useless these days unless you are doing some hardcore low-level shit.

Asm classes are easy, soley because nobody expects you to make anything too complicated with it. In the end OOP is more complex since with asm you would never attempt anything more complicated then a few loops or function calls. I took a few asm classes mips/sparc, its all the same in the end, once you get into the habit the platform is irrelevant.

Also if you plan on taking any hardware design classes or compilers classes (codegen), then you should take asm first and get to know it well.

assembly is just a pain in the ass.. the amount of work that it takes to do something simple is almost ridiculous.. If you're patient it won't be too bad though. just don't expect to do a whole lot with it.

It's not hard if you get into it and make the effort to learn it. If you try and get through it quick without really understanding what you're doing, it will be very hard. The first couple weeks of x86 assembly dont even involve actual programming. First, you learn how your hardware, memory, and processor works.

Ecchi22 03-13-2006 11:51 PM

Easy as fuck! :D

I sometimes miss programming in assembler..
