Another Toon Critique

These toons are part of a doorway presentation to my site. I'm using new Photoshop and other imaging software to make it look as good as possible. It looks good on my HD screen but each monitor is different. Lemme know if it looks good on yours. Are the colors lush and vibrant?

The subject matter is sci-fi stuff like giant women attacking army guys and stuff.

Sorry, but that "Boone's Cartoons" text is just awful.

Zebra 03-11-2006 07:35 PM

Put up your pencil work. Your coloring leaves a bit to be desired.
And BoyAlley is right, that Boone's Cartoons logo is a bit 1997

Greg B 03-11-2006 08:08 PM

Oh, you've got to click the toon because it's too big for the page format and it looks crinkled. The larger graphic will pop up in another window.

Pencil sketch work like this?

They're ok, I guess.

The nipples look like they're a bit sore -- overly red and hit with a blowtorch color, or something.

If I didn't know about the theme, I wouldn't have really noticed the little "things" on the bodies as "dudes" -- just weird little things.

---- edit

pencil sketch is kinda of hot, btw.

Thanks!

I've always won awards for pencil art. First comic I published had a pencilled cover and sold out in less than 5 days. I should do an entire comic in pencil art to tell ya the truth. People like sketches. It lets them see how it's done and has that hand made touch. I'll dig around for another pencil sketch to test.

Your pencil work is actually quite good. You need to find someone to finish them though, it doesn't seem to be your strong point. Not everyone can be Laura DePuy. Play to your strengths!

Okay, those pencils are supposed to be light sketches not finished. I'll post some finished pencils.

SGS 03-12-2006 06:11 AM

Greg, do you want to do some cartoons for us?

ackanime 03-12-2006 06:14 AM

Your lineart and sketchs are great, but I have to agree on the color. The shading isn't doing it for me. But to answer your question if the colors look vibrant, they're looking fine on my screen :)

I've always liked your pencil drawings, but I've never liked your coloring. I think I've told you that before though :)

Manowar 03-12-2006 06:22 AM

Good stuff

polle54 03-12-2006 06:27 AM

you need to work a little more on the hair and the contrast line

I don't have a professional opinion because my design sucks but as a viewer that is the only thing that annoys me.

As far as finishing or tighter pencils that's easy. Many ways to approach it. If I were to have someone else ink my pencils I would have to make them super tight. If I ink my pencils I like them loose so I can capture the liveliness of the motion.

Thanks TGF. There are many color approaches, here's watercolor wash for three alien designs:

and here's a light pencil sketch from a book about Atlantis:

Ja, people just rave about my sketches. There are some comic conventions I can't go to because several of the art collectors totally go stupid on me. They used to follow me around Manhattan and dig through my garbage. I should do a book of just pencil sketches though.

sfera 03-12-2006 08:48 PM

not bad bro

Ja, I'm not a major fan of the color but it's what the fans like. I've tried watercolor, flat color with all the doo dads like you see in comics but the fans like the simple lush stuff that looks like candy and food. Hands down it wins. So since the sales go up, I stick with it.

Again, sometimes I pencil light or use blueline pencil. It's a non repro pencil for comics and other illustration. Here's a scan of a sketch of Wonder Woman from DC Comics. I used a friend of mine who is Greek since Wonder Woman is supposed to be Diana the goddess of the hunt.
