More problems for commercial fishing!

First cod fishing in the northeast was limited by 50%.....

now salmon on the west coast

"n Seattle this week, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the federal agency that monitors the well-being of oceangoing species, predicted that this year's Klamath River salmon run would fall below the minimum for conservation (35,000 fish returning from the Pacific to the river to spawn). NMFS recommended that the fishery be closed this season, a decision expected to be followed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, one of eight regional councils established by Congress to manage fisheries up to 200 miles offshore."

Good, overfishing hurts everyone in the long term.

Morgan 03-11-2006 06:20 PM

commercial fishing should be banned.

fishing is fun, catch your own! :)

if they didn't over fish they're wouldn't be such low numbers and such strict regulations, they take a year off they lose a little money but i'm sure the population of salmon in that region would jump up by atleast half and the following season they'd be back at it again...

With salmon there is more to it than just fishing. A lot has to do with the rivers themselves, water rights, diversion dams, and all that crap.

they should ban commercial fishing period..

we can go out on a skiff & catch a buschel of crabs, 6-12 flounder & enough craoker/spot to feed an entire bbq worth of people in 6 hours with our bare hands

Red Lobster will suffer.
Dunno how they can keep up serving mass amounts of seafood.
In the long run it hurts the environment.

In the long run it open ups new opportunities. More companies open up assorted farms.
There is already a large selection of assorted fishes and shellfish that are primarly farm raised now. Salmon, ship, mussles, oysters, sturgeon, trout, catfish, and the list goes on. Hell it is only the picky people that demand or know the difference between wild salmon and farm raised.

its not sustainable....well maybe the lobster, but only because they can be farmed just offshore in giant cages

certain types of fish can be farmed as well.....but migratory fish are fucked

Hopefully some government(s) will just get smart and start making procreation bans.

Bans for "people", not fish. We're overpopulating the fucking planet and the carrying capacity of the place can't sustain us.

If we're a virus, then the earth should fight us off eventually.
