If I was to organize a search engine contest on gfy, would there be interest?

I have had the idea in my head for a long damn time, but seeing another forum do it kicked a foot in my ass. I have a long history of organizing events and planning shit, and I have always wanted to organize something like this

anyway, if I was to gather sponsors and get the prize money and items to something suibstantial, would there be interest?

talk about here please and give me your opinions

Jace 03-07-2006 12:23 PM

and just in case anyone is confused

i am talking about a SEO contest...I would pick a certain search term (non-words), and whoever had it at the #1 spot on google on a certain date would win

I could also do 2nd and 3rd place prizes too

polish_aristocrat 03-07-2006 12:23 PM

can't really comment on the idea, but I hope it would be better handled than Miss GFY ;)

it would not be run by GFY, and all auditing and judging would be done by multiple established industry folk

baddog 03-07-2006 12:26 PM

depends what the prizes are

QualityMpegs 03-07-2006 12:28 PM

I aiming for 100% cash, but in the event that someone wants to donate something tangible that would work also

and if I did this, I would not aim low for prize money...I am thinking 5 sponsors each putting up $1000-1500 piece

you would be suprised

I have seen them do this type of contest on SEO forums, and it is insane the amount of people that enter...from big dogs to small fish

SmokeyTheBear 03-07-2006 12:30 PM

i might try , but ill give you some suggestions..

In order to make it completely random you need to start of with a keyword that doesnt exist and the person whop setup the contest cant know beforehand ( or else it could be rigged )

All the other contests i have seen are rigged or can be rigged..

If i say lets start a comp next saturday and i will announce the keyword , i could have a friend making up pages and pages to drop on the day the comp starts and be way ahead of the game

I suggest using the first 2 letters of the top 5 yahoo news stories for the day and time it starts.

czarina 03-07-2006 12:31 PM

yes, it would be interesting. But it would take a while, and most likely people would lose interest. Remember, getting in a top possition in Google takes more than a few days. Unless it's using adwords :)

well, when I saw them do it on the SEO forums, people had the top result in 2 days on google

I personally can get something into google within 4 days now, getting it to the top is another story

and the contest I saw on the other forum ran for 3 months

and with the amount of prize money I am thinking no one woul;d lose interest

and...well, I just wanted to say and again

Jace 03-07-2006 12:35 PM

and just FYI, no one affiliated with sponsoring the contest, nor myself, would enter

not to bash on you but perceived as big dogs.
no big dog is going to expose how they do stuff.
I'm a micro dog and am not going to show my work
specially to the scammers thieves and crooks around here

Jace 03-07-2006 12:39 PM

here is what got me going on this idea the most

http://www.v7n.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23744

but as smokey said, those keywords were already known, and I love his idea of grabbing the first letters from the top stories of the day on yahoo, that rocks

then you wouldn't win anything

honestly, if all goes well I am going to do this, and it is not phasing me one bit if someone doesn't enter...

I completely understand where you are coming from though, but if you look on that forum that I posted above, you will see that tons of people entered that contest from big to small

SmokeyTheBear 03-07-2006 12:42 PM

if you do have it , icq me with some of your plans before you start. like plans on how you choose a winner and what constitues a winner.

Like if this thread ended up being ranked the highest who would win.. ? does the winning listing have to be on a server you own ? etc

on the surface i agree with you , but really theres not much need to worry about "copycats" . if your a good seo and people want to copy you they can just go to google and see your results right ?

WiredGuy 03-07-2006 12:44 PM

I suppose there would be interest from GFY depending on the prizes, but I wouldn't participate. I'm backlogged for months and don't have the time/resources to try to win a prize, I'd rather get paid cold hard cash for my work :)

bdld 03-07-2006 12:44 PM

i wouldnt enter, sounds like a waste of time to me just to win a contest.

for sure man, I would love to have your input...I appreciate that

I would think if a thread got ranked the highest then I would win ;)...haha...no, seriously, if a thread happened to get ranked highest I would say the nest one down after that would win

I like v7n's contest, but I think their rules are flawed and they didn't think everything through all the way

i think a lot of research needs to be done for sure...the rules need to be very firm

the prize would be cash ;)

I need to crunch the #'s, but as I said before I want to get at least 5-10 sponsors paying $1000 minimum each

u-Bob 03-07-2006 04:15 PM

good idea!

uno 03-07-2006 04:53 PM

I dig it.

That's a lot to ask from each sponsor unless they're getting some joins back in some way. Nevertheless, best of luck with it Jace.
