leasing sig space - how much $ ?
i think jimmyf mentioned it.. how much would you honestly rent it out for? i guess it depends on your post rate.. post content and how profitable it is compared to pushing referrals..
but a flat weekly fee or a per post amount? i actually think it's not that bad bad an idea... :) might be good for spacedog-esque requests |
I hope Lensman bans all sigs if people start doing that.
I hope all sigs get banned anyways. I am the anti-sig. I am f'n tired....I should really go to bed. |
Give me $100 and I'll put anything you want in my sig
|
i can see lensman being a little miffed.. but people are making money off sigs anyway.. i guess theres a difference between promoting your own shit and leasing out space.. theres a bit of a weird line there.... but really how different is leasing a space out to someone else.. and taking referrals using a button for someone else's program.. ??
im very pro sig.. i don't see the point in being anti sig.. whats the big deal? we're all in the same industry.. we've all got something to share.. i think it's great to know what people have to offer without having to start some thread asking about it.. do the sigs really somehow detract from the viewing pleasure of a "rate my poo thread"? sure i understand when it comes to RSI inducing half page sigs.. that can become annoying.. but it helps fuel the board to be what it is without heaps of spammy threads... i'd rather sig ads than constant spam threads.. as long as everyone abides by the rules lens has set out.. i think people are way too sensitive about a few goddamn buttons |

But there's always idiots out there who try to weasel around the rules, or who think their signature is a full page ad or something. When you limit the size of the button, they start adding too much text. Limit the amount of text, they start coloring their text like a goddamn coloring book. Limit the color of the text, they'll try and find some other way around it. It just gets annoying seeing people who can't just slap a button and two catchy lines of text in their sig and call it a day. |
If you're looking for a great way to buy some ad space, you can buy some space on my ass. It's a great marketing style that I've been using for about 8 years now. Every summer, I shave my ass bare, put on a thong, and take a marker and write sponsored website domains across my ass, then I walk up and down the beach all day. That's a great way to get some great exposure and it's not as expensive as you may think.

yeah.. i sooo agree.. it's pretty common knowledge that the button size is 120 x 60.. i mean you can tell that from other people's buttons even if you didn't know... it sorta pisses me off that i've gone to the trouble of making sure my button was smaller than regulation so as not to piss people off.. and i've followed BV and made it half the height so there was less scrolling involved and it didn't space out the posts as much.. but then someone will come in with half a banner or a half page of text and be pretty oblivious to any negative feedback... but at the same time im not going to go after people as i'd feel a bit like a sibling whining about how unfair it is that this other person got "more then me" .. i mean who's going to police it? are we really going to list everyone here who breaks the rules and get them to change? i'd feel a bit of a narc..
lensman re-states the rules every few months but a lot don't listen to him.. or miss the posts.. |
I have a post rate of over 20 per day. bwahahaha. This is prime real estate baby!
But i don't think i could be bothered.. |

shaddup, self market, dont make a fucking spectacle... then we will all get along, lensman makes loot off of all our posts, knowing that some of our posts are motivated cuz of the sig exposure, and we all make out... have fun, make money.... stupid threads like that will fuck up the balance.... hey i have an idea.... let's all pciket the whitehouse on monday with signs say WE KNOW PORN WEBMASTERS WHO POSSESS UNLICENSED PICS.... for christ sake use your brain... and from what i can tell from your previous posts, you are actually quite smart.... ::passing you a side dish of commense sense to complement your intellect:: |

k-man.. im not actually offering to pay anyone.. merely interested in how much they would be worth after the idea was floated in another thread.... i don't see whats so wrong about starting a discussion on it.... lensman can come in and say "it's not on guys" and that would be cool.. i've just never thought about it before.. and it did make a bit of sense and a moral equivalent to promoting someone else for referrals..
the purposes for starting a dialogue like this are the same for any other.. to work out the pros and cons.. personally i don't see how it would be like a slap in the face to lensman.. he doesn't worry about the referrals in the current buttons and no serious advertiser is going to rent out people's sigs rather than the proper board spots he provides... but if he feels it's taking too much of an advantage from the forum he provides then thats the gospel on the subject. i thought it would be cool that if someone like spacedog posted a big thread on his misfortunes you might offer him $20 a week to post with your sig.. but at the same time the more that i think about it you could encourage a lot more retarded posts.. im sure you'd have people making up multiple monikers and getting rent for three spaces.. and if you paid per post you'd just increase the garbage amount. also i don't think i'd like to have no control over the content of the post that would be above my sig.. you might not wan't it associated with a particular stance or person.. pure curiosity thats all.. nothing to get worked up about. |
Those who know, know.

my initial post probably does come across as more gung-ho than intended.... im not into making spectacles... i don't mind letting the thread die or deleting it if it's going to cause an imbalance in the force :)
|
why would anyone lease someone elses sig space anyway? Sounds pretty dumb to me....... hell, I don;t use my sig 80% of the time anyway..... does anyone actually click the links in the sigs around here?
|
I think there is only a problem with leasing out signature space if a program or site being displayed is dishonest/not a good site. As opposed to someone putting a link in their signature because it is a good program that they like, it will be because they are being paid for it, and might not have any affiliation or care for the program themselves. That's only problem I see with it. I occaisonally check out signatures, I've seen Aaron's on quite a few signatures, guessing he's giving discounts on content or something. ;)

i think they're a good thing click-wise for new programs or sites however.. there's no way renting a space is going to stack up anywhere near a performance based referral.. there is something to be said for being the first to reply to someone asking for a specific service.. and if a person gets a commission then they'll spruik your service more effectively than a renter just happening to post you sig for the enquirer to see.. once again as mentioned in my first post.. im thinking more like a favour you could ask someone in return for a little financial help if they're going through a rough time.. hence the issue of instant money over a performance thing.. people here don't like taking charity so it could be a small thing they could offer as payment.. just a thought. |
good points bhuto....
I don't know if leasing someone's space would necessarily be a good thing though.... like was mentioned already, you wouldn't really have much control over the points of view of that poster and certain topics could end up casting you in a bad light..... but I agree with the idea of using them for related topics or really, more of a "quick-link" system.... for instance, if someone asks to be spammed with hosting deals, it's much easier to just pop in and make a quick reply with ready-to-go links in the signature rather than typing them out every time someone asks for hosting deals.... this is pretty much the way I use mine... I try to keep it to relevant topics as best I can.... but sometimes it sneaks in when I forget to uncheck the box..... (since it has to be unchecked every time) anyway... interesting topic you got going here... thought I'd add my nickel. :winkwink: |
Unless super-posters Amp, Boneprone, or the new up and coming Tasmanian-Posting-Devil Chodadog Is selling space you are better off just buying actual GFY button space.
If Amp didn't take off for vacation he would be cracking 10,000 posts right now. That's some prime real estate! |

that said.. i do recognise people by their banners.. i mean i've got to say i know what a lot of people push around here purely from the gif's.. so it is good branding (and i love how fletch puts his url on all the pics he posts :thumbsup ).. and i do click on them myself when the occasion arises.. i guess it comes down to a good mixture of direct sales from targetted threads and other people being aware enough of your product to want to mention you.. then again i am biased.. lol i love making buttons and flash ads.. so perhaps my opinions should be disqualified for my financial interest in the topic. :winkwink: |

Thanks for the mention there Bhutocracy, as I notice you do love making buttons and flash, I shall require your talent one day, I know, so I also know where I will go, when that time comes, regardless of recommendations in someone's sig for flash or button design. Comments and assistance stand out far greater than any method of banner maneuvering or placement or design. Thanks again for the help bro.

Don't any of you remember when good ole spacedog had "Rent This Space" or something to that effect in his sig? :)
|
I had that in my sig for nearly a week - as a joke.
|
Well boards are there to get known ... If that wouldn't help nobody would really hang out there as much as they do ... sigs are good for that ... But when it becomes spammy it's bad ... yo umust keep something good between both ... I was asked for sig rent on my board and I laughed at the guy ... there is not even any sigs there lol :D was funny :D
|
Yeah, I like the sigs too. I've actually clicked a couple and found something useful.. they aren't all bad. Promoting your own thing is better than just slapping a referral button for ARS or something though, imo.
|
well i think sigs are a great way for lurkers to find good sites, so that they don't need to post these spam threads...
