ever paid a contractor under the table?

getting some work done to one of my properties, and the guy wants to give me a deal if i pay under the table. i'm so anal about taxes and the govt, i'm sure i'll pass. your thoughts?

eamedia 03-05-2006 05:53 PM

sounds like an affiliate that dosent want his commisions reported...

Lycanthrope 03-05-2006 05:54 PM

I do nothing under the table, furthermore, won't this expenditure increase your property's value, therefore YOUR tax liability?

chadglni 03-05-2006 05:54 PM

Yes but if it's something important I'd pay normal in case they fuck it up.

JoeMeca 03-05-2006 05:54 PM

how much under the table?

bringer 03-05-2006 05:56 PM

under the table means no permits which means no one to verify their work is correct. theres a good change anything you get done will have to be redone

breaker 03-05-2006 05:57 PM

Not worth it.

marketsmart 03-05-2006 05:58 PM

don't do it...

JFK 03-05-2006 06:00 PM

quiet 03-05-2006 06:01 PM

Fuck It Yo... Homeboy Just Tryin To Get Some Extra Money In His Pocket. If You Don't Wanna Spend A Lot Of Money Pay Under The Table... If You All Scared And Shit Then Don't Take A Chance... Cuz Once You Do It You Can't Change It Or Both Of Yall Going Down.

the Shemp 03-05-2006 06:22 PM

its pretty common in Canada

baddog 03-05-2006 06:26 PM

would not recommend it . . . I did a major remodel with my first home and it turned into a total clusterfuck. It took probably 5 years to get resolved from the beginning of construction to the final collection of the judgment against him.

Am glad I had a legal contract

u-Bob 03-05-2006 06:29 PM

pay a "small part" under the table.

why do you waste your time capitalizing the first letter of every word? are you just trying to be different? or do you just have horrible grammar?

Morgan 03-05-2006 06:34 PM

ive done some jobs w/out permits recently. nothing major though.

not even sure anything ive done would require permits. i ripped out a couple bathrooms, but just to redo all tiles, new sinks, toilets, counters, etc... no walls were modified.

new hardwood floors, carpets, heating/ac, etc...

so where do they draw the line for actually needing a permit for something? sorry, im a fresh first time homeowner.

JFK 03-05-2006 06:51 PM

what I dont understand is why , I should have to pay tax on someone's labour ? I pick the people I deal with carefully , and discusss in advance as to what is to be done. The savings do add up over time, its not what you make, its what you keep:2 cents:

WiredGuy 03-05-2006 06:53 PM

If he's someone you trust, sure. If this is the first time using this guy, hell no. Legal contracts have some recourse, under the table, you're screwed.

Spunky 03-05-2006 06:53 PM

What if he does something wrong and bails on you..you don't have anything in writing to fall back on

zigx 03-05-2006 06:54 PM

if people are going to live there dont do it... if its u and u wont sue urself over a ceiling injury to the dome, then do it

pornguy 03-05-2006 06:55 PM

If it is some minor shit, then yeah, pay the guy under the table. If it is something that can easily get fucked up, then get the legal contract, and do it the right way.

drunken ninja 03-05-2006 06:55 PM

I knew a tile guy got paid $100,000 under the table to do some bathroom work...that was LA though

quiet 03-05-2006 06:59 PM

yeah, it's minor - certainly no structural shit. still don't think i'll bother.

Matt 26z 03-05-2006 07:03 PM

This sort of thing is pretty common with small jobs.

Usually if it's structural, electrical, or plumbing you'd probably need a permit... and it could depend on if you live within city limits or the county..

Even if you don't get permits, you'd want to have plumbing and electrical inspected.. 2 things that don't hurt to have the eyes of the experienced look over..

RobbieRye 03-05-2006 07:44 PM

I guess what you're really forfeiting is any type of warranty, recourse, and assuming all of the liability when paying a contractor under the table.

Personally, when the contractor I paid to build my fence said "want to pay cash", I jumped at the chance. When the road crew came by and said "we have extra ashvault, if you have $500, we'll do your driveway", I said "yes please and here is a case of beer if you toss in a load of gravel underneath".

But, these are both small things that even if I had a warrenty could either be easily repaired by me personally, or not repaired at all.

Pornwolf 03-05-2006 07:48 PM

Pay him under the table Q. Don't be anal over some small stuff. The man is just trying to eat.

KRL 03-05-2006 07:51 PM

A lot of contractors won't even take a check.

So true. In fact in Quebec, we take it for granted that the work will done under the table...

Pretty common in Australia too. I wouldn't do it for a large sized job, but the cash economy helps keep alot of small businesses afloat over here.

It is really up to the city you live in. If you went up and asked for a permit, they would probably charge you, but of the items you mentioned I would think that heating/ac would fall under the category of needing one.

I know I should have gotten one to replace my roof, but forgot to go down there.
