Computer industry??? A fork in the road

Ever since I was 12, I was always fascinated with computers, code especially. I messed around with code making small programs with visual basics and found myself working on that kind of stuff hours upon hours. In the back of my mind I knew that with my hard work and ambition I could possibly do well in this business(at age 13). After experimenting with afilliate pay per click programs till about age 18, I felt that the money I was making couldnt possibly provide for a family and live well in the future. After experimenting I lost interest in the industry and started pursuing a career as an orthodontist. Anyways, a few months ago I accidently came up with a crazy new idea. I started researching the idea and by surprise found out that very few people are actually exercising this new business idea online. I later found out that these three companies got started about two years ago and are each pulling in about 3 million a piece. I am basically more than half way done with developing this "new" idea online and realized that my life may be taking me in another direction. Now being a junior and college and having my foot in the door to a dental school, i may want to just say screw dental school and go full force with this idea. I've spent so many sleepless nights thinking about which route to choose. I am confident that this idea will work for me, but i still have my doubts of course. Has anyone experienced the similar situation i'm in? What advice do you have?

Well one thing for sure is that going to med school will for sure give you money while this idea of yours might or might not, Id say that if your confident enough that it will work, go for it but if you're still unsure stick to school.

make sure you get your degree either which way. the adult biz isnt guaranteed money...even for the big-ballers

Take fewer classes in school, make sure you pass all your courses.

I am in a similar situation, I am online making a decent living, but I go to school as well. The more school I do, the less time I have to work online, therefore I only took 3 classes this semester (2 days of school a week), so I can focus on work the rest of the days!

yea im only taking a few hours as well, so i can develop it and have it up and running before summer. I definitely want to get my degree, im just not sure about dental school. Dental school has you by the balls with studying, so there is no way i would have the time to take the idea to a successful level.

I was the same way; running non profit information security groups as a youth; and head long into the infosec/datacenter biz at the age of 16 after working in the industry for near a decade I found myself burning out... I took a break and whent into the callcenter and direct marketing industry and since have returned to the infosec/datacenter business and have found myself with a renewed passion for what I do!

finish up with school, you can still do your project also.

woj 03-05-2006 05:07 PM

I would continue with school, even if it means 1 class per semester, once you quit, you won't be coming back....
