Best Johnny Cash songs?

I admit that since I saw Walk The Line the other day I have had his songs swimming around my head. I am going off to an Oscars party in an hour. So, I am taking this time to try to purge by listening to all the Cash songs I can fit into the hour.

What is your faveorite Johnny Cash song. I currently have Jackson stuck in my brain but I like a lot of the stuff from that period.

Ring of Fire -- hands down.

Sarah_Jayne 03-05-2006 02:11 PM

I'm loving 'I've Been Everywhere'

szango420 03-05-2006 02:12 PM

still havent seen that movie.. i need to get out..

Scootermuze 03-05-2006 03:02 PM

An old album cut of 'Ira Hayes' was pretty good...

Call him drunkin Ira Hayes he won't answer anymore
not the whiskey drinkin' Indian or the marine that went to war...

Kinda of a true-ish story I guess..

Ring Of Fire

Love is a burning thing
and it makes a firery ring
bound by wild desire
I fell in to a ring of fire...

I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
the ring of fire
the ring of fire.

The taste of love is sweet
when hearts like our's meet
I fell for you like a child
oh, but the fire went wild..

I fell in to a burning ring of fire.....

Cash's version of Hurt drips with a raw emotion that Reznor could only dream of. :2 cents:

Calico Jack 03-05-2006 08:41 PM

Listening to 'The Essential Johnny Cash' as I type.
Gotta love just about all he recorded...great stuff!

reynold 03-06-2006 04:46 AM

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

PussyTeenies 03-06-2006 04:51 AM

Broda 03-06-2006 08:21 AM

I don't really have any fav songs of his. The ones I listen to are the ones I like, the others I shut out LOL

Anyway, does anyone know if it was actually Johnny Cash's voice they had dubbed into the film when he was singing them in the movie? Or was it Joaquin Phoenix actually singing?
When June Carter sang it sounded to me like it was actually Reese Witherspoon singing.

It was Joaquin Phoenix singing and Reese sang too. Which is why I thought he did such a good job.

WebairGerard 03-06-2006 08:29 AM

Ring of Fire is great. His part in Highway Man is cool too.

As for covers:

Redemption Song by Bob Marley with Strummer is AMAZING.

His versions of U2's One and Springsteens I'm On Fire are very cool too.

Wow, really. I never watch the ending credits so I never found out. I was determined to this time, but forgot LOL.

And indeed - he did an awesome job! It was a great movie and his portrayal of JC was fantastic. I've always known Joaquin was a great actor but who did earn my respects the most is actually Reese Witherspoon because I've only known her to play this dumb bimbo type. But here she really showed some class acting.

Again, great movie. Might even watch it again in a few months time.

She has been great in films for a while. Freeway which is a modern horror telling of Red Ridding Hood was the first time I saw her and she was fantastic. Election is another good one from her early work. I forgave Legally Blonde because everybody needs to make money. Legally Blonde 2 I had to think was contractual.
