What do you want from a web host?
Do you only want cheap bandwidth, space and uptime or stuff like mysql, ssl...?
|
SEPARATE ip's for each domain preferably at no extra charge or a one time fee per ip (not $2 per extra ip per month!) What if I want 100 domains on on a separate ip? Am I willing to pay an
extra $200 per month just to have a domain on a separte ip?? Ummm...... not really What's up with some of these hosting companies offering a dedicated server with only 2 ip's?? :eek7 I would say that probably 80% of all my traffic is SE and I need separae ip's so that in case one domain gets banned from a SE not every domain gets banned. But I guess if you just do galleries and don't care much for SE's this doesn't apply to you. Good support. A good host needs to address all my requests in a timely manner. If they can't be bothered with me, then I can't be bothered with them. They need to offer ssi and set it up correctly so I can use the same ads and banners and ads on ALL my domains, and they need to do it correctly the first time. I just changed host and half of the banners on some of my sites are not loading correctly because my host did not set up the ssi correctly like I requested. :eek7 My host needs to be UP 99% of the time.If their not up, then I'm not making any money...duhhhh Ok, "rant mode over" |
Everything... Absolutely everything.
And yes, that includes a daily suck-o-gram delivered right to my door by their big breasted models (i don't know why they have models, this is my fantasty, fuck off!) |
bp has the hook up.
Family rates icq 66883099 |
ssh is a must from multiple IPs... like our tech is in Britain, we are in Ohio another helper is in Maryland...
Don't jam the servers with domains... lots of things. :) |
Give me cheap bandwidth and 99% uptime and I'm happy.
I don't care about mysql and cgi and that kinda crap. I just run pure HTML and pictures and movies and my server currently averages 10mbps. :thumbsup |

10mbps could be a big bill, but I host my server with cologroup.com and they're really cheap.

Rackshack for example takes a $25 (!) setup fee per new IP and a $1 fee per month fee, and I thought they were cheap... |

Yes there are. XXXWebhosting will give you 128 ip's if your on a dedicated server, but they are pricey. I have an account with Vector and they always give me separate ip's (for a one time charge per ip) And Prohosters will give you 100 free ip's, but they've had some problems/downtime in the past, so I'm wary about using them. $25 per set up fee for a new ip is CRAZY! Vector only charges me $10 for a ONE TIME set up charge. And I have some other domains hosted on cheap cogent bandwidth, and they charge $2 per month for a separate ip (Not too expensive, but it can add up if you have a lot of domains) |
Something you guys should realize about IPs. There are a limited number of IPs in the world, and right now a group named ARIN decides who gets IPs, and makes the rules up for using IPs. Using 100 IPs on one webserver, is a blatent violation of ARINs policies. A couple of years back Exodus (who you guys should know was the largest host at the time) use to give our IPs to their customers whenever customers asked for them. ARIN actually removed the rights for Exodus to get any more IPs for violation of their rules. If a large host can't get new IPs, it could defintely happen to a small host.
|
Yes I heard something about ARIN. So I assume name based hosting is the way to go for domains.
Anyway, how important are ping times for you? I'm thinking of setting up a server at 213.113.66.252 (it's located in Sweden), but maybe it'll be too slow for US traffic. Anybody want to ping it? :) |
For virtual accounts
Unlimited Domains on an account (seperate IP for a small charge if requested) Unlimited POP3 Seperate Mysql database capability for each domain PHP4/Perl *DECENT STATS* - Wzlier is one of the better ones. But, the thing I have been looking for: Cold Fusion on Linux! I know the older versions sucked, but the new one is a lot better. |
And IP per domain is an unsustainable business practice. Companies that offer it are either not in it for the long-term, or just too fucking stupid to realize what the consequences are.
It might be just me, but I wouldn't want to host with someone like that. If you want, I can link to the ARIN regs about ip based virtual hosting, as most don't seem to believe me. What we offer as a host is extremely competent technical know-how, personal tech support with someone who has a clue, and extremely good reliability/speed with set consequences for us if we don't meet availability metrics. So yes, we're not the cheapest but you've also never heard a post on here about us, or anywhere. And we've been in business for over 3 years now. Shrug. -Phil |
Some very cheap bandwidth, and some great support, and I think the customer is set.

Can anyone in the US ping 213.113.66.252 for me? please :)
I need to know if it'll do for hosting a US-based site... |

I have everything I need already thanx to ISPrime Hosting.

Uptime is most important, then comes inexpensive bandwidth.

Uptime, Price, customer support, and long term stability.
I don't want to have to move my sights ever, thats a pain in the ass, (been there done that to many times). Right now I have 4 dedicated servers at Techie Media. I've been here for almost a year now. I do about 50mb/s spread out on each server equally. I have good solid bandwidth, uunet, level3 etc, (no cogent). My sites are up always (unless a network issue which can happen to anyone). My bandwidth is calculated on 50th percentile which is awesome. I never need to worry about those major spikes and I'am always fast. I feel pretty safe and compfortable with them as they host some of the major players, so they watch everything very closely, and my little old sites are always rockin. The customer support is great, they have a trouble ticket system which gets everything done in a few hours or less, and if emergencies occur they have icq and aim support, and Yes a real phone. :thumbsup |
