prepaid porn cards . . . any experience?

A blast from my past made a recent reappearance and he comes bearing prepaid porn cards.

You buy a pin number for $10 or $20 and get unlimited visits to hundreds of sites for 1 or 2 weeks (depending on the card you purchased).

Have any of you dealt with these before? If so, the good, the bad and the ugly please.

Is this something you would like to hear more about?

ahh yeah i remember those... good idea i think... just depends how you market them or give them out.

Strip clubs and such they would be good in... but not for generic paysites.. too "ordinary"

Well, my buddy started out in pre-paid phone cards back in 96. I guess he met someone in Vegas that he had prior dealings with that suggested these "porn cards."

You gave me a good idea, in that they could probably be given out as free trials to your pay site. They sell them for about $6/each.

I still need to get more details of what his idea is and what part he wants me to play.

Forget about strip clubs. Tried it. They are resistant to digital porn because most of the owners are old style porners and not into tech. They think it takes away from their biz and their customers will stay home getting off instead of getting lap dances with their girls.

They do sell well at swap meets though. :)

Yeah, I had the same experience when I tried to do a venture with some local adult video store owners.

If you can track him down - Gonzo had some experience with those a few years back I remember - if you need help finding him let me know

If I remember correctly the issues of pre-paid porn cards were that of distribution and residual value for the paysite after all the people in the distribution chain got their cut. A $20 pre-paid porn card might only bring $5 to the paysite owner, with little or no chance for an upsells or renewals.

How does it happen? Consider the margins at each level - card management (the system) needs some cash. The distributor of the cars needs some margin and a reason to collect the money from the end sellers. The end sellers need to make markup on what they sell. Just like phone cards, where the store retailing the cards for $10 are only paying maybe $6 per card (local stores in Chinatown montreal sell $10 cards for $8 or so, if you ask in the nice chinese way - and they are still making $2 per card).

I had this discussion with someone at a show about this about 5 years ago, and I can't see that the situation has gotten any better.

4 or 5 years ago myself and a partner went down that road. Because of the anon nature of the cards I was expecting it to do much better than it actually did. We eventually dropped it. The biggest hurdle is distribution. If you need more info hit my icq

I paid a whopping $1 to $2 each wholesale when I was playing with it. At least 5 years ago.

pre-paid cards would be a cash transaction...who is doing the age verification to the end consumer? who'd be liable when they get sold to minors

What are you talking about?? You have to be 18 to get into a strip club or adult store.

I think kids are much more likely to get porn online than from a card they buy in person. :1orglaugh

If they are paid for with a credit card, that issue would be resolved.

To everyone else, thank you for the input. I had about a 5 minute phone call with the guy last night, and a short email today. When I get more details I will pass them along.

My understanding is that the cards have a suggested wholesale of $6 for a $10 card.

Have for years. These cards sell well in europe and some spanish countries. US and Canada have been slow to adopt but will eventually. We North Americans are slow on a few different innovations.
