President George W. Bush being told the day before Hurricane Katrina hit that the city's protective levees could fail.

The tape contradicts the president's statement four days after the hurricane struck: "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees."

There are a lot of factors that need to work in unison in order for the levees to fail. He probably used multiple expert opinions and decided that the risk of that actually happening was small.

That cracks me up... meanwhile the mayor used the federal funding that was supposed to shore up the levees over the last three years to build madi gras fountains and line the pockets of his friends, utterly failed to evacuate according the the plans laid out for the city, didn't issue the order until 24 hours before instead of 3 days like he should have, didn't use the city buses to evacuate the poor, etc,etc, etc.... Meanwhile Clinton didn't get any crap for not having federal aid into the earchquake zones in LA and San Fran in the early 90s for over a week.... and he shouldn't have.... evacuation and first response are the responsibility of state and local governments you dunderheads!

The levees were built to hold back water. They failed. They're not designed to fail. They are designed to work, but didn't work as expected.

not even the experts could predict with a certainty the levees would fail, it was just a possibility. what could bush have done anyway, it's the hurricane's fault they fell.

I'm totally in agreement with those in this thread that say that the President most certainly had all sorts of different information coming in from different sources, and it's quite possible that the overwhelming theory was that the levees would hold when the hurricane swept through.

That said, however, it's also still very undeniable that the President lied.

Where have you been? The army core of engineers said the levees would not hold up to a direct hit from a cat 3 or higher years ago. typical govt style the levees could have been upgraded to withstand a cat 4 or cat 5 for 10 - 30 billion. now its gonna cost in the 100's of billions.....

what bothers me more about this whole situation is not the fact that the govt failed on all levels (local, state, and federal) but that the govt will repeat all these mistakes over again next time..

If you have been paying attention, you will notice that bills and amendments, both on state and federal levels, have been coming equally from BOTH sides of the fence. It isn't a matter of which party, it's a matter of constituants of BOTH parties getting to their representatives and demanding action. It's a sign of the times, and family americans getting tired of their kids accessing porn all the time. It doesn't have anything to do with the Republicans being in office, because if it did, then THEY would be the ones sponsoring the bills only.
