Alienware? Dell? Other? - Laptop thread
So it's time for me to buy a laptop, well a better way to put it would be a mobile desktop. Something to take from my house, to the office, and on travels and what not.
I know that most people have centrion setups (pentium mobile processors) and i'm wondering if you ever find that to not be enough power? Using photoshop and the like? I'm looking at laptops on www.powernotebooks.com and www.alienware.com and you can get a laptop with a full blown p4 desktop processor with an ass whoopin vidcard and nice 17" 1920x1200 display. battery life is 2-3 hours vs. 3-4 hours with the centrino setup. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated |
I've got a barely use DELL XPS laptop for sale,
contact me if interested 17" widescreen 1gig ram 256 meg video 100gig hd etc hit me up for more details |
This isn't a laptop, but it's compact, pretty cool too.

the most expensive ones are usually the better ones

I just bought a Thinkpad (IBM/Lenovo) -- the fingerprint reader is great. But, I'm going to return it (it was supposed to support DVI with a docking station, but their datasheets were wrong, grrrrr). Toshiba or Apple will replace it.

i like the new compaq laptop models.

2 years ago I purcahsed a Dell Inspiron 9100. Still going strong. Tickeled pink with it. Only thing I don't like is the weight. It gets heavy carrying it thru the airport.
|
I like my Sager laptop. Had it going for over 2 years and it has kicked ass. Big 17" screen also. Only think I don't like about it is that is like 10 lbs but I suppose it had to be for a "desktop replacment"

whoa, you're the first person I've talked to that picked up a Sager. Is it one of the p4 desktop processor ones? how's the heat? how's the battery life? |
I also have a Sager.... p4 2.8gig
1 gig ram 128 video 60 gig hd its heavy as fuck and puts off way too much heat it sits on a desktop now 15" screen by the way |
I dig my Asus Z70v (not Z70Va).
2GHz pentium m 2 GB ram. 60 GB hd 15.4" screen. Not too heavy (6 lbs), quiet, not too hot, runs well (even with photoshop) and wasn't too expensive. |
I have the HP pavilion notebook special edition with a gig of ram and a 100gig HD.
Very very happy with it. Good battery life, stays cool, lightwieght, very fast, and great support so far from HP, etc... |
Alienware are very expensive for what they are. I love IBM laptops myself.

I love my wife's HP. great laptop. I really want the 1920x1200 res display though and they don't offer one that high res, so i'm left with sager, alienware, or dell if i want that res. |
i just read the coolest article comparing the 2.26 ghz pentium M to the p4 desktop 3.4ghz (as well as other articles)
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_cont...d=pm780&page=6 looks like they perform simlarly but the pentium M uses WAY less power. |
DO NOT BUY AN ALIENWARE!!!!!! Unless you have alot of spare time to get jerked around on tech support to try and fix their fucked up product. Mine worked for about 3 months then after honestly about 20 hours of tech support and sending it in and getting it back twice, the fucking thing is still fucked. It's sitting in my closet collecting dust. BEWARE ALIENWARE!!! Go out and look at the review on the review sites, you'll see lots of horror stories like mine.

I've got my eye on the Sony VAIO series. Check it out.

I have an Alienware 51-m from like 2 years ago. I've only ever had to get the cd/dvdr replaced and they were really great and fast about that replacement. Otherwise, I use it for mostly gaming now and it runs VERY hot. You absolutely need a cooling pad and a good one, even then it can overheat. It's pretty heavy as well, but durable and pretty powerful. This was my first laptop so I don't have anything to compare it with.

I'm thinking about getting the Acer C314 Tablet. http://www.tabletpcreviewspot.com/de...asp?newsID=294 I have a Toshiba now, works great, but too heavy and too hot.

Dell is over marketed and unreliable.
Alienware is waaay over priced. I would go with something ealse. Strangly enough Acer is making some pretty nice notebooks these days. They made junk desktops back in the 90's but I have sold about 25 Acers over the last 3 months and they are all doing well. |

If you have the money you should go for an IBM Thinkpad T60. Dual-core cpu.
IBM T-series notebooks are about the best of the best. |
Thinkpad. It's built like a tank.

I just bought an HP 17 inch notebook, 2.2 turion process, 1 gig of ram 2-100 gig hard drives a full kb with number pad, only trouble is it only goes to 1440x900, but love it so far after 2 dells and only 1600.00
