those programs with those kinds of vids will re rip the dv tapes and make super high resoulution.

1280 is a waste of bandwidth. You can scale it down to 640x360 and drop the bitrate down to 3M/sec... maybe even 2M/sec@30fps, and still get pretty much the same quality, and a 5min video will be right at around 100Mb.

Yeah, saw it now, definitely needs to be de-interlaced. I don't know if that will help with compression. I also think you could probably getting away with compressing further without much noticeable difference, but that's just MHO. :)

first end user tend to be on shitty old computers with crt monitors
second dial up is still pretty big
