China is adding 3 Chinese character TLDs to its English .cn, creating a competing .com. Surfers can now access the Internet outside of servers controlled by ICANN, according to this article. It makes sense for China to do this, as they want complete control over access of information entering their country. It will be interesting to see if other countries follow their lead and set up more competing Internets.

I've always said we would eventually see country-specific internets to go along with the world wide web. This is the start of that.
There are many reasons to support such a thing. One of the biggest is the fact that western world countries need a safe haven online from certain countries who bring nothing but problems to the internet.
Then there's the globalization thing. As it is right now, the internet empowers people in very poor countries. Their lifeline to western money isn't going to last forever.Comment
