LAN Security Help.. Please Read

I am currently living in a apartment complex that offers ethernet to all residents. I am curious if there is some type of software or devices that can keep my surfing habits private. THe reason I say this is because I know it is easy for people in the office to view what type of sites people are accessing. As many porn sites that I visit a day, I don't want everyone in the office to think I am some type of pervert. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

anonimizer.com

on the other hand, you could probably spy on your neighbors ;)

get a good packet sniffer ;)

Using anonymizer.com won't prevent other people on a lan from sniffing your packets and seeing where you are going. It will make things a little less obvious as all your packets will be routed to the anonymizer instead of some porn site, but the packets will contain more or less the same data. If you really want privacy on your lan, you need to setup a VPN (virtual private network) between yourself and someplace off the lan that can proxy your traffic.

Get a router with a firewall. May help and will at least let you split the line for multiple machines.

BlackICE is the best, get it @ download.com

Thanks for all the replies. I really didn't want to go the router way, but I might have to do that.

I don't think BlackIce will do shit.. Thanks though.

This is Cool if the building offers ethernet where would you need
a router for?

How is a firewall going to prevent others from analysing tcp/ip
packets? Especially if potential sniffers are on the outside of
your firewall?

Want to hide your surfing habit on the ethernet? Use Dialup :winkwink:

You need to discover whether or not your local network is switched. If it is, you have nothing to worry about from other apartment dwellers.

Set up a copy of Ethereal, and monitor your ethernet card. If it is not switched, you will immediately see hundreds, if not thousands of packets than neither originate from nor are destined to your computer. If you see this, then your only option for protecting the last mile of your internet access is to tunnel into somewhere else that has access through and encrypted tunnel, and use their connection.

Chances are your network is switched.

I am not really worried about other aparment dwellers, I am worried about the people who work in the office. I have a friend in there and he said they can easily see what sites people are visiting. That is why I wanted to install a router, so that I could surf in private. I currently have a switch hooked up because I three computers using the ethernet. But I need the privacy...

You got one thing wrong,BlackIce IS SHIT and does
not do very much of anything... Found this out
when it 1st came out (bought it, tried it)...Then read the same later...
If anyone is using BlackIce and thinks they have
a good firewall there living in a tree....

ZoneAlarm ( Rocks )
or
Norton...
and Norton Personal only
if your not on a network

Who fucking cares what those content nazi's see you look at.. the better for you..

If your in the U.S., I would try and surf as many teen and 17 sites as possible, wait for the fuckers to call the cops then sue.

Won't have to worry about shit then.. you'll own the fucking complex!

This is true. Unfortunately, there is no way that you can stop anyone on your ethernet from sniffing your packets. If nothing else, your sys admin has complete access. I am sure that you are on a switch which is a good security measure that most people cannot fuck with. No sense in getting a router because that will not help. That only stops people from OUTSIDE your network, not inside.

Like Smegma said, wait for any sign that someone is sniffing your packets and bust the shit out of them.
