How stupid is it to build a site on a .net if
you don't own the .com?
|
Re:
Not that stupid... You could lose a lot of traffic becuase most people naturally type .com without thinking about it, but through advertisements and PPC/CPC you should be fine.
What kind of site are you planning on hosting on your .net domain? |
why would it be stupid?
|
I guess he's thinking of losing traffic to people typing in .com instead of .net. But it isn't that big of a problem.
|
If you're branding this site it is a HUGE problem.
|
if you own the dot com why would you advertise your site with dot net? just my two cents :)
|
I don't own the .com I just have always gotten .com's cause I never wanted someone else to profit from my site being popular.
But in this case all the .com's I can find are taken, but .net's are available. |
Ifriends was branded .net and it's how I remember it to this day. If "network" fits behind your site name it's even better.
Ifriends.net Internet Friends Network Yes surfers are stupid but they remember silly shit like bash.org, boingboing.net, and many other sites that aren't on .com. Yes someone will accidentally type .com one day, guess what they'll see it's not you and try again. |
You will lose some typins but if the name is that important to you, like others said brand the shit out of it and also get the traffic from hardlinks.
|
thehun.net
I do not remember if he owned the ,com before hand but I still type in thehun.net |
It can either be a problem or a benefit if the .com advertisers more than you do.
Gary kept Sex.net. There is wisdom in that move. |
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
|
Hey just think about www.lemonparty.org - It just wouldn't work if it was .com.
|
I have some site that i like that are not in .com zone. it took me some time to memorize this, first caoupe of time I was typing .com, but thet git used to new adress.. I think if the site is good and well promoted it dosnt really matters where it is
|
Very very stupid! BTW see sig...

not stupid, tho .com is naturally better.
|
I've done ok with .net sites before, but I'll only try it on traffic sites where i dont really expect the surfer to come back - at least via a typein. Having said that, I'm sure everyone has seen some killer branded .net sites that hold their traffic very well.
