well, if you have a 17" monitor just put another one on top of it and you´ll have the answer ... doh ... I think it measures the diagonal ... well, then make that 17" monitor stand on one of it´s corners and put another one on top the same way ... there you go, 34" ... almost close ...

well. 12 inches = 30.5 cm
so do the math :D
