My computer is on fire!?!!?

The other day my girlfriend said she could smell burning or something in my office...

Today I've touched the top of my computer and it's RED hot, the PSU, the case and the internal hard drives are really really hot...

Any ideas?

Are the exhaust fans working properly? The burning smell was probably plastic melting down inside the PSU if that fan has stopped (or at least was stopped at the time).

JuiceMonkey 02-24-2006 05:43 AM

are you typing this right now on that same computer?

cheekycherry 02-24-2006 05:44 AM

It feels like all fans are working but probably not as strongly as it should on the PSU, I can't really tell.

cheekycherry 02-24-2006 05:45 AM

Yes, on that same computer but I've taken side off and using a big desk fan to cool it all down. Installing pcwizard to check stuff.

I just love my fanless workstation, ultra quiet, no malfuntioning fans, no worries
about heat :pimp

The only thing that's annoying is when I insert a cdrom or dvd and hear the disk
spinning :1orglaugh

Might be a good idea to power it down if the drives are ultrahot.

Same here - heatpipe, passive cooling and 2,5" drive = <3

cheekycherry 02-24-2006 05:54 AM

lol...

Thanks for help guys, gonna power down and buy a new PC...

Been itching to do it for a long time now but better resolutions on counter strike were never big enough reason.

Matt 26z 02-24-2006 06:00 AM

Take apart the PSU and see if any of the components melted. Also while you are in there take the PSU fan out and spin it with your finger. Fans that are going bad won't spin perfectly and they may even have a grinding sound if you listen close.

I cut the wires on all my PSU fans and run them outside the PSU box and into one of the PSU plugs. This doubles the speed of the fan, but that really depends on your PSU. Most do not run the fan at it's maximum speed. Just be ready for the added noise, if that matters.

You need to blow out the fans every once and awhile as the dust gathers up inside and causes it to slow down. Then the computer overheats.

Happened to me, and blew out a powersupply.

nakedhollywood 02-24-2006 07:43 AM

Could be the hard drives. I had 3 in my last pc. Smelled burning and took apart pc, when tried to hook them up individually. They caught fire one after the other. Only lost about 230 gigs of info :(. And a singed eyebrow or two. damn computers.

cellmoresmut 02-24-2006 10:01 AM

Hey Do Not power it down before you get your files off of it. The drives may not start up again...

minusonebit 02-24-2006 10:15 AM

The burning smell, if it smells acidic, usually means your shit has been hit by lightening. Its hard to describe the smell, but its so strong you can taste it if you get a good whiff, if you can imagine what mercury might taste like, well, thathahaha8217;s what it will taste like when you smell it.

Continue posting on GFY, everything will be fine.. There is no Fire..

My brothers monitor caught fire once. I told him not to let his cat lay on top of it, but he wouldn't listen to me. Burnt cat hair is nasty.
