Due to persistent coup rumors and recent revelations re coup plotters and destabilization attempts, Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declares a state of emergency.

Practical effect: warrantless arrests, govt takeover of media (if deemed 'necessary') and frees up the military to crack down on rallies/protests/rebellions.

Business effect: too soon to tell but police power has definitely been expanded due to no warrant requirements. My guess is business as usual unless things get out of hand re the current EDSA REVOLT 20th anniversary of People power that toppled the late dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

Thanks, man. Honestly, it's too early to tell if the reported coup/destabilization is gonna happen. There's just not enough "critical mass" amongst the populace to 'legitimize' a military withdrawal of support or coup. That was what made the first 2 EDSA revolts successful. :2 cents:

Maybe. Tagaytay, Here I come! Seriously though, my mainstream media company has nothing to fear from any "crackdown". This State of Emergency is meant only to address mass rallies and destabilization efforts WITHIN the military. I don't think it is aimed at cracking down on all activities.

If any of those were the case, my bet would go with a communist group. The muslim population is only about 5% and is mainly located in the South of the country, where I believe they have some kind of separatist movement.
