How can bandwidth be more expensive in Canada if you can get Cogent connections in Canada for the same price as the US?

Also, I used to work for a guy that had a direct connection to Telus and he was paying $0.30/gb....is that more expensive than the US?

Jamie 04-23-2002 04:04 PM

Why would you host in Canada when they buy all their bandwidth from the US?

Host in the US

Contrary to popular belief, Canadian telecomunications companies do have their own networks y'know. Just like american telecomunications companies have theirs.

.30 a gig with Telus?

Maybe at a very very high level. I have never heard of Telus getting below $2 per gig.

The Question is , and it was asked already, is why the hell would you want to host in Canada:eyecrazy

Cogent is not in Canada, and HBHosting has their servers in the US.

if ur canadian and u buy bandwidth from a canadian company, don't u have to pay taxes on that? same as if u buy something on the net from a canadian company?

i'm not sure about tax laws and whether or not these companies are incorporated elsewhere, but revenue canada might get a lil pissy if they find out.

Last time I checked cogent was not availble in Canada. What is your source?

It is unlikely that Telus was charging only $0.30/GB.

http://www.tera-byte.com is in Alberta.
