Going to Maui for the first time ever, any advice?

I am going to Maui in March and I am very excited. I have never been to any part of Hawaii. Any advice from those of you that live there or have been there. Where to go, what to do, what not to do?

Thanks,
Mark

check and see if the guy that paints himself gold and pops is still working mainstreet in waikiki for me please that dude is the man...and for good viewing right down the street from there will be a police kiosk on one side of the street and on the other side there will be an assload of hookers chilling...i thought it was fun watching the cops look the other way as johns walked them to the nearby hotel with police watching over them for protection...been a few years but im guessing not much has changed

Actually, you weren't asking ME anything. And Waikiki is on a different island. Kinda hard to stop there, dontcha think? Maybe he can stop off in Surfers Paradise, Australia while he is at it?

Use your head.

Nope, you created a good thread. It's just that somebody without much intelligence decided to direct you to a beach that is not even on the island you are visiting.

Tell me what part of the island you are staying on and if you will have a car or not and I will get back to you with some suggestions later.

You make a lot of assumptions.

Spunky 02-22-2006 09:19 PM

Ask some of the locals..certian beaches tourists are mugged.heard of many horror stories

huey 02-22-2006 09:24 PM

I stayed in Kiehi on the west side of island. There is big beach realy nice and little beach the nude beach. Nice and quiet
Not as windy as east side of island. The town of Lahina is north of there and really nice also. Snorkel on the Molokini (spelling) reef is awsome too.

BusterBunny 02-22-2006 09:25 PM

i would agree to spunky to a certain extent the locals are the ones that would be robbing you so if you ask the wrong ones you are screwed..muggings and theft are a huge problem there so watch your ass..if you are using a travel agency they should have the general info for you..if not wait for a few valid answers from here and use them...

Little Beach is also the GAY nude beach. Thank God I have a good friend who lives in Wailea and informed me of this before I made the mistake of showing up there.

BlueMedia, I'm headed out the door now but I will hit you up on ICQ later tonight or tomorrow and help you out. I spend a week in Wailea ever year and have found some nice places on the island.

PixeLs 02-22-2006 10:10 PM

I have friends who live near Kihei. You may stay at Maui Kamaole Resort while looking for some great spots there. :thumbsup

OK, I have no idea which mountain it is, but everyone I've known who's gone to Maui said there's a tourist thing where they drive you up the mountain before sunrise, you watch the sunrise and then ride a bike back down the mountain. I'm sure those who've been there know what I'm talking about.

I've only been to Oahu and The Big Island but would really like to get to Maui one of these days. Take lots of pics!! :)

PamiebDVD 02-22-2006 11:53 PM

That mountain is Haleakala (spelling sucks). I've done it 2x. You go up in the morning, they pick you up around 3 or 4 am. They drive you up for sunrise then take a guided bike ride down the mountain. The sunrise is the best thing you've ever seen! (Take your camera)Make sure you take a guided tour down. The unguided ones can get you pretty lost.

I can't remember the name of the company we last used, but they are in the same building as Bad Ass Coffee (it's some pretty bad coffee.)

Been to Maui 5 times.... favorite island of them all (been to all of them). Be sure to take the road to hanna (sp?).... ALL the way around the island.... lots of churches made of shells and cows on the FAR side of the island. Be sure to NOT go around the other side of the island (the one they say it's illegal to take your rental car on... they say that for a reason). you GOT to rent a convertable... the only way to see the island. Next time stay in Kihei.... it's got awesome weather year round. If you go jet sking DON'T wear a bathing suit with the netting in it... the waves will make the netting rub holes in your butt (OUCH!)... Mostly... have fun! If you do decied to go to another island (we often have to extend our vacation at the last moment) you should visit Waikiki, and go on the pub crawl..... TONS of fun! Lots of drunk chicks from all over the world. Stay away from the drunk Aussie chicks though... they're CRAZY.

Daruma 02-23-2006 01:19 AM

Make sure you visit Big Beach Maui....Some of the best waves and the water feels like bath water. Enjoy :0

I've taken rented convertibles down the back side of the road to Hana with no problems. And yes, you should bring a camera.

WOW!! :thumbsup

Do you know Aaron Matthews website? I can't find it.

Thanks,

Things to do:

1) Check out Captain Steve's adventures in rafting...Snorkel trips, whale watch trips... great fun!

2) Definitely if you've never been, sunrise on Haleakala with the bike ride down from the top is amazing.

3) Most of the places in Lahaina are overpriced, but some are reasonable. You definitely want to eat at the original Maui Taco in downtown Lahaina. Great Mexican food. You also might want to check out Kimo's if you like Prime Rib. Very overrated place: Canoes... ditto for Cheeseburger in Paradise.

4) The aquarium is worth a day trip...

I agree with AaronM on this.. I have taken a rental convertible around the back side a few times with no issues.. Last time I did it I was following a Limo doing it, so its not THAT bad... Slightly hairball at times...

I would suggest if you take the road to Hana (GREAT DRIVE!) get an early start, pick up one of the tour cassettes they sell for the drive, they are entertaining and have a few good tips on where to stop along the way... TAKE YOUR TIME and stop where you want and when you want.. Do not use the cassette like a bible.. Its good but there is plenty more to see... Once in Hana get a room someplace, there is only one hotel but a few rental houses you can get at a decent price or hostel (not the movie) type crash pads... The next morning check out Hana and find the Red Sand beach (VERY hidden and not on the beaten path, it is listed in the "hidden hawaii" books usually)... Then hit the back road around the island, ignoring the "NO RENTAL CAR" signs....

Makes for a real nice couple days and gets you a nice feeling of the island being able to stop and explore the less seen areas... Hit me up on ICQ if any of the above was not clear...

Once again.. My favorite thing is the Red Sand beach cove... Hopefully Aaron has seen it and can verify its pretty cool once you hike thru the cemetery and down the hill to find it...
