For fans of Clockwork Orange

As some of you know, I live on the housing estate where a good deal of the film was filmed. In particular the underground garages across the street from me where used in a number of scenes but particuarly the one where the kill the old man.

Anyway, last week I woke up to the sound of heavy machinery and when I looked out of my window I saw they were knocking down the garages and most of the areas used in the film.

Today I got a letter from the company that owns the this estate talking about the demolition. In the letter they actually site one of the reasons for knocking it all down as an attempt to disassociate Thamesmead with A Clockwork Orange. A bit silly since they could have made money off of that. There was another film shot on Tavy Bridge (the area being knocked down) called A Beautiful Thing which is a gay themed movie and the fan club of that movie come here every year to tour it.

Anyway, I know there are fans of the film here and I thought I would let people know a bit of cinematic history is being bulldozed.

I will take pics of the work site in the morning. I refused to walk through those garages at night just because of Clockwork Orange. They are ugly but they had character.

well that is a real bummer. If you can take pics and post them that would be awesome though.

That sucks, A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite films of all time. By the way, read the book - the last chapter wasnt included in the movie!

Sarah_Jayne 02-22-2006 11:42 AM

It was the association with violence, I guess.

Gnat69 02-22-2006 11:43 AM

This is very sad, I love that movie and watch it prolly once a month.....I have always had a major hardon for Malcolm McDowell especially now that he is much older......DAMN!!!

Ultraviolence, actually.

Excellent movie, but not Kubricks best IMO. Check out Full Metal Jacket, The Shining or Dr. Strangelove.

Sarah_Jayne 02-22-2006 11:48 AM

I have seen all of those but I don't live across the street from where they were filmed.

nadanada 02-22-2006 11:50 AM

sigh that is horrible. great movie.

I realize that, I was just mentioning them as very good movies.

VicD 02-22-2006 11:56 AM

How about Caligula then?

Sarah_Jayne 02-22-2006 12:00 PM

ruined by the penthouse connection but it has its moments

Drake 02-22-2006 12:05 PM

Too bad. I always wanted to do a bit of the old in and out there.

Tim 02-22-2006 12:09 PM

No more Municipal Flatblock 18A?

GregE 02-22-2006 01:00 PM

That really does suck, all the more so for the elaborated upon "reason" offered.

That movie BTW comes off as crisp and new today as it did thirty plus years ago.

Zoe_Zoebaboe 02-22-2006 01:36 PM

This is a sad day....

indeed and sadly becoming a bit too close to accurate on this estate at the moment. It is still far safer than most places of equal economic status in the States or a lot of places in the world but I a decline is noticable.

Sam Granger 02-22-2006 03:36 PM

Damn thats a shame :(

Its one of my alltime favourite movies!! Love the teet milk machine :)

StatsJunky 02-22-2006 03:42 PM

I still have never seen this movie. It's been on my todo list forever. I think i'll go pick it up this week and watch it.

X37375787 02-22-2006 03:49 PM

After 30-some years they decide it's bad for the image? C'mon now, preserve a piece of movie history!

Sarah_Jayne 02-22-2006 03:52 PM

It is what happens when a new company buys out the old landlords. I guarantee you 98 percent of the teenagers here now have no clue this was where it was filmed.
