Guba no, P2P yes? Thoughts?

I wonder how many people here are upset about Guba but are happily downloading copyrighted content for free through P2P networks.

And remember, Limewire eDonkey and all those other shitballs make money too from it (ads), so this really IS apples to apples comparison.

Defend yourself!
(for the record: I hate 'em all. I rooted for Metallica during the Napster law suit and everybody was up my ass for that)

Unlike those P2P systems, GUBA hosts the content. Plus they manipulate the content by making thumbs and re-encoding the video for PSP & IPod formats, so it's not the same.

***The above was stated in about 1000 other GUBA threads.

Kroy 02-21-2006 04:26 AM

So that makes P2P okay in your book?

Jakke PNG 02-21-2006 04:42 AM

No. P2P isn't ok. But unfortunately there's pretty much nothing we can do about it, except flood it with crap + videos with popups and shit. Try to render it useless.. Guba checks for that crap and roots our moneymaking possibilities out, except for watermarks.

I also don't download my mp3's or get my tv-series or movies from p2, and I actually buy all my software.

Don't try to paint us out as hypocrites.

Kroy 02-21-2006 04:42 AM

Nobody else has an opinion on this?

Kroy 02-21-2006 04:43 AM

TeenGodFather, sorry, didn't see your post until after I posted.
No painting nobody but with all the hubbub about it I'm curious. A dude can be curious, no?

aico 02-21-2006 04:46 AM

Neither is ok, but neither is the same.. so it's not apples and apples...

what he said.

Kroy 02-21-2006 04:54 AM

Okay, I can see that point.
Now, do you think Guba will face similiar suit action for infringement? I just can't see how it's that much different from P2P networks (at least in terms of taking copyrighted material and making it available to others for profit) so one would think Guba will get slapped too?

The p2p networks aren't hosting the content.
p2p = peer to peer = user to user.
If Guba was just to show the usenet in an easy-to-view method, they wouldn't be liable..but they rip all the stuff to be hosted on their own server.

A p2p network would be shutdown in a week if they hosted all of the mp3's on their server.

If you can't see what's wrong with their biz model, that's your problem. I have a problem with how they run their shit..but that's my problem.

I did have plans to not get involved in any of the 100000000's of guba threads..but I got lured into this one. I'm out.

Kroy 02-21-2006 05:12 AM

I understand the differences very well, the point I'm making is that the principle (again: other people's content) is similar. If you don't want to get involved that's fine. Why be so hostile? The question was not directed towards anyone specific so please calm down and have some camomile tea or something.

Jakke PNG 02-21-2006 05:36 AM

Where did you see hostility in my post?
I just stated facts, and it has nothing (or little) to do with making money off stolen content.

Edit: nevermind I don't feel that lucky :2 cents:

Problem is binaries on usenet is nothing more then encoded mime/uue text documents. Files are broken down and encoded by the person uploading and decoded and reconstructed by the downloader. It's not the actual files on the servers, this is how NSP get by all the copyright laws. Most will cancel user accounts when complaints come, but they themselves are perfectly ok as far as the law goes.
I didn't realize guba was converting file formats until it popped up in the million threads posted about them. That might be skating on thin ice for them, would depend on their methods for converting the files though.
