the problem isnt GUBA ---- its YOU :)

make believe a million GUBA's popped up tomorrow.

wtf are you going to do?

ok, forget GUBA. Think of all your content already floating on usenet, P2P, forums, irc, etc..

wtf are you going to do?

what HAVE you been doing? bitching to take your shit down? C&Ds? death threats? How far do u get with these? How much extra time and money do you spend on this? Im sure you have calculated what its costing you in the backend..

Personally...I think many people here who are so quick to cry about Guba is going about it the wrong way. And what I mean by 'it' is, protecting your content.

DRM is a start and has nice potential. IP and bandwidth throttling and tracking of users on your sites is another way. And I can think of a LOT of other ways thats not even being done yet. All patent pending :winkwink:

Its 2006. Get with it and figure out new ways to protect your shit and stop operating your biz like its 1998. Otherwise, embrace these techologies, websites, and whatever else that pops up that is threatening to fuck with your $$$ and content, by finding ways to profit from them with your content.... at least enough to offset what you may be losing by doing jack shit or spending all that time tracking every infringer down..

:2 cents:

none of your comments gives a company carte blanc to do whatever they feel like with content they know is stolen.

embrace these technologies??? what technologies???

copyright infringement is not a "new technology"

however the technology of stealing content has gotten alot more advanced, with guba spearheading this unethical practice.

The key thing that can sustain a publishing business for the long (long long) term is killer content and brand identification. ThisBucks and ThatCash will go in and out of business, either making a quick short-term profit and then collapsing when affiliates move to the next well-marketed program... or collapsing quickly like that tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it.

Meanwhile, the companies who are creating the content that surfers want will stay in business. These companies actually BENEFIT from illegal trading. Look at how many people search Overture for brand names from companies like Nasty Dollars.

How many people are searching for "ThisBucksGenericFrontendToCrappyOversaturedConten t.com?"

tony286 02-20-2006 08:41 PM

I think its annoying when a webmaster board lets them buy ads. You are right Im looking to drm right now, going to do the footage only works on three ips.

Harrison Richard 02-20-2006 08:42 PM

BTW DRM is doomed. Anything encrypted can (and will) be cracked, ripped, and repackaged somehow.

DRM is snake oil.

Heres a qoute from Guba's site....

"if its not on Guba, it doesnt exist"

pretty powerful statement if you ask me.

that pretty much says to me, "we've got it all"
stolen, illegal, etc...

Thats the problem. You keep looking at 'technology' as methods of stealing.

No, no, no.

OK fine, you can call it what you want, but the root of it... well Its all about DISTRIBUTION methods and mediums, which go hand in hand with security and protecting your shit. If the infringers have new ways to distribute your content, then you need to find new ways to distribute your content while at the same time protecting it. Up the fuckin ante.

There will ALWAYS be copyright infringers. Whether its porn, music, hollywood movies, etc. Your C&D's will only get you so far, as far as your own country is concerned.. dont bother sending any to Russia or China, they will wipe their asses with it.

Its all in the distribution methods. Make it harder for those that infringe to take your shit. Do I have to spell it out? lol.

Am I going to give all my own ideas here away? Fuck no. Im just trying to get more people to see the big picture.

How many surfers do this? Hell even disabling right click is enough to prevent most retarded ass surfers from getting pics. Surfers are dumb. I have seen friends and family and mere acquaintances who have been on the internet for years and still have problems with basic surfing.

If I lock my car do can it still be stolen? Yes very easily. Does that mean I leave my car door unlocked? Um no.

- Any attempt to protect digital media will fail

- Digital media empower content producers

- People search by niche before they search by brand

So all ya gotta do is create a brand that people associate with search. Maybe one day someone will do that.

good point...

I can relate to this personally as I have friends and family and co-workers always asking me how to do this n that since im known as the 'tech guy'... yet these people have been on the web for quite some time. Many people see what they see on the web and take it as a given. And many times when these same people get fucked, ripped off, all virused up from some dumb ass TGP or flaky cookie cutter porn website with the same ass generic design that 95% have... they are far less likely to buy again.

IMO this industry has gobbing, sapping, tasty shitloads of money to make once it stops fucking over surfers, find new ways to distribute (and protect) content, and taking a stronger stance on innovation in its delivery and presentation in general.

Maybe movie studios should encourage illegal DVD copying. Can't get more branded than 20th Century FOX, Paramount or Disney. Illegal copying will instill brand name loyalty of studios in people's heads and maybe one day they'll decide to stop getting DVD's for FREE and PAY for them. Um...yeah sounds logical.

im not going to sit here and say that something can be 100% protected. Thats crazy. Nothing is 100% safe from anything, anywhere, whether its your content or your kids or you or your dog.

I agree with everything you are saying.

My thread here was just to open some eyes on finding new and better ways to protect and distribute content. What you are saying tho, is another thing all together, which I agree on. But unfortunately, most people in this biz are here for the quick buck, and dont have enough creative juices going , or money, to come up with something new, fresh , and innovating in their content. Those that have, have been around for awhile and have spawned several copycat wannabees trying to bank off their found success. But these are all few and far between.

I see what you are saying but you cant exactly apply the issues of Hollywood to what Harrison is saying ... Becuz hes kind of on another subject ... But, speaking of Hollywood. Have you been to the movies lately? The thing about movie theaters is that the biggest consumers is teens and young adults. Box office sales have sucked dick lately and have been getting worse. Is it because you can download these movies right when they come out? I dont think so. I think its similar to the porn industrys problem - distribution mediums, and delivery. Forget the infringers for a second... Because the music industry has its fair share of infringers yet artists are STILL able to sell CDs...

Problem with Hollywood box office, as i see it, is that... they come out with DVD versions TOOOOOOOOO fucking quick. Usually within 2 or 3 months now from a movies last show. A few years back, even with DVD technology out, they didnt come out with the DVD version of the movie THAT quick, and most of the time people didnt assume a movie would automatically come out on DVD. So now people are sitting and thinking, when a movie comes out 'Well, i could just wait a 2 or 3 months when it comes out on DVD and rent it for $3, watch it in the comfort of my own home without getting ripped the fuck off at the movies with a $9 ticket and bag of popcorn that costs nearly as much'. I dunno. Thats just an example.. and a rant Ive heard many times over from different people.

I think the morale of this thread is: change your approach / delivery :thumbsup

There's still innovators out there. But outfits like Guba contribute to an overall climate that effectively handicap everyone's ability to derive a decent livelihood from that innovation.

Actually there are about 18,000 other GUBA's...

And this is an awesome revenue stream. Surfers post cropped pics with no watermarks... Affiliates should be FLOODING them with pics with watermarks and telling the newsgroups to fuck off when they complain we are spamming them. We are not spamming them, we are providing the SAME porn just with a watermark so we can actually get paid for it.

Im aware of your point. I always watermark 99% of my content and expect, to some degree hope, that our images we put out on free hosted galleries and the like get out there and seen.

But, to alot of the more popular sites, we are talking about entire membership areas being sucked up, reformatted, and offered up in variuos formats.

To the surfer... hey, thats a great deal.

Most of us arent talking about the free shit thats on their servers. Its the entire members areas, full length movies, that are being uploaded.

I think alot of people have content from other peoples sites in their members areas for upsales. Thats not a big deal.

The line is crossed when you arent upselling with the content, and its content not approved for promotional use that lines their content database.

I dont have a problem with their technology.

But there is a thin line here.

Lets say, they, or another site like them, hire people to go into members areas, suck up the content, upload it to newsgroups, then use their software to grab it from the newsgroups and sell memberships to it.

Now im not saying that they are doing that, but they know very well there is a ton of stolen content on there.

watermarking helps, but not when all of your watermarked content has been stolen and posted on newsgroups.

TreasureBucks 02-21-2006 02:06 AM

Im not going to promote someone thats stealing from my other sponsors.

How does that work for me?? If i promote 20 different sites and guba, and you can find all or most of those sites content on guba, the surfer isnt going to buy from any of my other sponsors when they quit guba.
