Let's boycot GUBA!

GUBA are content thieves, that's a simple fact. In fact, they even go so far as to transcode videos to different formats, for example for easy viewing on the PSP (source), etc. Clearly, that goes beyond simply providing Usenet access.

So what can we do? Simple, let's boycot them - and their affiliates.

2 easy steps:
#1 - don't use them yourself
#2 - send those trades, affiliates, etc. that you have that you know are using them a notice that GUBA steal content, and, possibly, that you may stop doing business with those using them

Harmon 02-20-2006 03:51 PM

Let's not and say we did:)

Brujah 02-20-2006 03:52 PM

Good luck with that. Steal content from Guba supporters, they don't seem to mind :)

Libertine 02-20-2006 03:57 PM

I know it sounds like a rather wild plan, but seriously, what else can we do? Stand by and watch as we get stolen from?

The only other alternative would be a class action lawsuit, which excludes non-US companies and requires far more effort.

Dagwolf 02-20-2006 04:00 PM

I've been boycotting them ever since I signed up for their program and saw how it worked.

Alert Norm Zadeh to another potentially profitable lawsuit ? :1orglaugh

Just for grins add guba to your banned text list for your TGPs. I'm sure there will be a few morons trying to promote guba with galleries this week.

Forkbeard 02-20-2006 04:02 PM

Somebody's got to speak up for GUBA, since nobody here seems to understand it. I guess I'm a good somebody to speak up, since GUBA sends me a huge check every two weeks.

Long story short: Don't believe all these folks who slam GUBA. The "stolen content" rap is total bullshit; in the niches I promote, the *vast* majority of the content in the newsgroups is actually put there by the content owners to drive traffic to their websites.

Remember, GUBA is just a friendly interface to the paleolithic part of the internet. Usenet newsgroups, the uncensorable built-to-survive-nuclear-war part. GUBA sells no content and thus is in no position to steal any. It's just an easy way to get at the newsgroups for folks who aren't techie wizards.

I've had dinner with GUBA's head lawyer, and I'll tell you what: they have the legal shit covered. There's nothing illegal in what they are doing; if there were, some of the rich loudmouths here on GFY would have already sued them back to the stone age.

Now for the good part: As an affiliate, GUBA is simply awesome to deal with. GUBA has been very very good to me. Their recurring billings are particularly sweet -- they recur at much higher percentages than anything else I've ever promoted. As for service, they are always johnny-on-the-spot for me by email or phone whenever I have a question or issue.

Quality folks to deal with, great conversions, and the best rebills I've ever encountered. What's not to like?

My advice: Ignore the haters, and give GUBA a try.

Tough shit. If threads start getting locked I'll bet the drama kings of GFY (yes, including me) will get fired up and start some real bashing.

thats how it is...

not saying that i support that, but i'd think everyone would realize that spending money on GFY ( especially huge money ) gets you special treatment

mikeyddddd 02-20-2006 04:09 PM

So there's no problem if I head over to GUBA, download the shit there, upload it to my sites and charge people to access it?

Sweeeeet :thumbsup

Even if the *vast* majority of content was put there by content owners (which is doubtful), that would still imply that there is stolen content. Furthermore, even using that content which is submitted by content owners is theft, since they didn't give permission for the content to be re-used on other sites.

Also, since content is indeed filtered, they don't provide "an interface to" usenet, they provide "a selection of" content on the usenet.

Not much different than registering www.highlightsoftheusenet.com and putting the highest quality pictures and videos you find on newsgroups online for all eternity.

Manowar 02-20-2006 04:36 PM

Bumpppppp

Pornwolf 02-20-2006 04:36 PM

GUBA is not a primary producer of Usenet content and is therefore exempt from the provisions of 18 U.S.C. hahaha167;2257
