How hard is it for a Host to provide backups???

They all make it seem like this is impossible, and they never do it. Just lost a server and despite repeated conversations about having back ups, it turns out they never did it. WTF??? I have a copy of a service ticket with me asking for them and offering to pay more. They closed the ticket 30 days later and did nothing. Long fucking day coming up.

hmm.. I've never had a host that made it seem impossible or who didnt do it nightly.. So I'm not sure how to answer this.

Jam in a backup tape and click go I'd say.. Swap tapes each night so you always have 1 good backup should do it.

Well, I need to know where you host.

Well I have some domains on a dedicated server at http://www.m3server.com/ so you could check them over.

Name the host.

National Net has a beautful system for backing up entire servers and it works well.

Some of the websites I've put on line have taken years to create and would be nearly impossible to recreate. Also, if your hosting all of your databases with sales information backups become extremely important. Most of that information would be impossible to recreate.

Call National Net. http://www.natnet.com/hosting/

sounds like a cowboy operation if they say that make backups but actually don't

alternatively, get cheap hosting like dream host and do a nightly ftp transfer or something

mainstream or adult? shared or dedicated? managed or unmanaged?

AdultEUHost: backups = no problem
Dreamhost: daily backups
OC3 Networks: backups = no problem

darkwood 02-20-2006 09:41 AM

as long as you can provide a root access for them backups should be no problem

slapass 02-20-2006 09:59 AM

I have 4 dedicated servers with them. These are managed in that, they were told i was an idiot and they had to do everything. We have a trouble ticket from August requesting backups and telling them I would pay more if I had too. The ticket was closed and obviously they never did it.

We are rebuilding the sites from google cache as best we can. Fucking nightmare and staff over time etc. this is going to suck.

Will do.

Nightly backups always.

keyDet79 02-20-2006 10:39 AM

Things like this happen when you cheap out on hosts, they still need to make a profit though ;) All decent hosts perform at least weekly backups, it's not a hard thing to do since you only need a 2nd drive and mirror the accounts to them. It's very important, what will you do if their shared server gets hacked or if the drive crashes or so? If your host is a liar, charge back and get a new one, it's your business they are playing with.

webair 02-20-2006 10:49 AM

Have you tried talking to them or giving them a call? [email protected] hit him up im sure he will do all he can to get you straightened out

Tom_PM 02-20-2006 10:52 AM

Yeah, your host and registrar hold a ton of power over your business, so pick very good reliable ones no doubt.
