Just finished watching Requiem For A Dream for the first time

and I have to say, it really did blow me away.

I was expecting something completely different... but the way that it was done, ESPECIALLY the ending 3-4 minute montage with all 4 characters. It took my breath away

what did you guys think of it?

Deputy Chief Command 02-20-2006 12:46 AM

me thinks you is a gay cowbay like them brokeback fellows

datatank 02-20-2006 12:49 AM

LOL it was cool 4 years ago

emthree 02-20-2006 12:50 AM

What's it about?

pocketkangaroo 02-20-2006 12:50 AM

I had the same reaction. Just kind of sat there with my mouth open like WTF. Good movie though.

SilverTab 02-20-2006 12:51 AM

Yeah I love how it's made...kinda makes you feel down afterward though!... such a depressing mood...but yeah overall, good flick! I bought the DVD

datatank 02-20-2006 12:52 AM

jeese, that part was super fucking sad and hot at the same time...

I felt like somehting was wrong with me enjoying seeing Jennifer Connely in that situation. But fuck... I guess that omes with being involved in the porn biz :disgust

RayBonga 02-20-2006 12:55 AM

Ass to ass!

WarChild 02-20-2006 12:56 AM

Having been involved with heavy drugs in my youth, and having many friends that did the same, I can say the imagery in that movie is absolutely stunning. The images they use to convery the drug use are the things you actually remember; Licking the joint closed, drugs bubbling in the spoon, etc.

That movie hit a little too close to home for me in that respect and actually made me shiver. Very well done movie.

RayBonga 02-20-2006 12:58 AM

Here's what the movie is all about:

Quote:

"Requiem for a Dream" teaches us that doing heroin leads to jail time, amputation, and being a whore. What it also teaches us is that if you apply yourself and get rich, you can get invited to these classy parties where heroin-addicted whores will do all sorts of crazy shit on a coffee table right in front of you. And they take requests too. Sure, Big Tim may be a drug dealer, but he's not making any money off it. He's only selling heroin for pussy so obviously he has a damn good day job. How else would he be able to pay for his swanky place and be able to throw these kick-ass parties? So I think what "Requiem" is ultimately telling us is that if you don't do drugs and get a good-paying job you can get poor drug-addicted girls to fuck on your coffee table in front of twenty of your friends. That's the American dream right there.

It is a great movie. I consider it to be one of the top movies actually because it is different. The camera work, the acting is good, the story line is just a little different, but the editing makes it really well? overall good movie.

why did you start getting involved with drugs? if you don't mind me asking?

too much money? problems at home? peer pressure? or nothing better to do?

curious minds want to know :)

reed_4 02-20-2006 01:47 AM

It looks like an interesting movie, i would check it out.

Elli 02-20-2006 01:51 AM

Incredible movie. I thought it hammered the point home a lot more artistically and sensitively than Trainspotting. so depressing, though.

Well, how are you going to know if you like something if you don't try it? :winkwink:

Theo 03-02-2006 01:08 AM

good movie and even better soundtrack

Theo 03-02-2006 01:09 AM

From what I remember, it mostly sucked.

The ideas behind the movie were bland and unoriginal, the story was weak at best, the characters were mostly one-dimensional, and it tried to conceal all of this by going to the extreme in both style and content. True, some of the filming is creative and original, and the music really complements the images, but ultimately, that's just whipped cream and glazing on what is otherwise a turd.

I disagree. Trainspotting has some things that Requiem for a Dream lacks, like humor, reasonably developed characters and a decent and fairly original story.

reynold 03-02-2006 01:35 AM

the 1st time i saw that movie, i was moved to tears.

Rui 03-02-2006 01:38 AM

This movie is one of a kind...its truly amazing

uno 03-02-2006 01:50 AM

You might also like Trainspotting and Spun if you like Requiem. RfaD is too depressing to watch more than once a year or so for me. Same with Gummo, Happiness, and a few other movies that are also very good and most of your friends have probably never heard of them. :)

com 03-02-2006 01:53 AM

definately a moving flic

fuzebox 03-02-2006 01:54 AM

Pi and Requiem kick ass.... Both excellantly done movies. The drug related subject matter of the movie doesn't bother me so much, but the film itself is so well directed....

Gummo and Happiness are both great movies :thumbsup
They both suck you into weird, vile worlds that seem like parodies of our everyday existence, which provoke both a sense of disgust as well as a sense of tragic comedy.

sweetpiece 03-02-2006 02:04 AM

darren arronofsky is one of the best directors ever ever ever

the saddest stories, imo, were the womens. they were so removed from their humanity that their self destruction was because of vanity and the 'need' for drugs. harry and whatevermarlonwaynescharactersnamewas were thinking about the women they loved, not drugs or a red dress

also, jared leto was totally hot

cmos 03-02-2006 02:26 AM

Only retards want to dicuss 10 year old movies.
But the movie is great, love the music.

WE'VE GOT A WINNER!

Far-L 03-02-2006 03:04 AM

Love that movie... but it took me three times watching it before I realized it is a comedy and not a tragedy... and that is about the time I became aware of its true genius...

je_rome 03-02-2006 03:29 AM

Great movie! however, according to Beck Finley, the movie lacks symapthy for uts characters. "Frankly, the amputation, the imprisonment, the orgy, the force feedings, and the electroshock therapy are far more memorable than the characters themselves. None of the characters have epiphanies or revelations, or even give a clue that any thought beyond the next high has crossed their minds. This might be true of real-life junkies, I don't know. But it's not what I want for my movie-going experience. There isn't a thinker in the bunch, much less a dreamer. So I guess I've gotten the point. Addiction is bad. Drugs are bad. Just say no."

Beck Finley sounds like a nazi critic.

"it's not what I want for my movie-going experience"

he should direct n' produce his own movies then and watch only them lol

one of the reasons its so good is because it ends at the pinnacle of their destructions

shermo 03-02-2006 03:42 AM

Amazing movie. I saw it for the first time about 5 months ago.. In fact, I think it's time to put the DVD on :)

everestcash 03-02-2006 04:23 AM

i saw it twice, not bad, but not amazing. second time - just because i had no other movie on my desk

jonesy 03-02-2006 04:34 AM

over rated cinematic masturbation thats trying too hard and been done before.

a movie for high school and college kids.

the only redeeming value is the soundtrack and a surprisingly good performance by the wayan brother.

and whar punkworld said -

2HousePlague 03-02-2006 04:38 AM

Reckon that all the egregious drug-related *sin* was a kind of "porn" -- meaning it was a thing we wish not to see ourselves ever do, and this movie was FAR more destructive on the Fallwell-o-Meter than any fierce fisting vid that ever came out of Sherman Oaks -- :2 cents:

reynold 03-02-2006 05:18 AM

I would have to say Jennifer Connely gave a better performance in Requiem than her forgettable role in A Beautiful Mind

2HousePlague 03-02-2006 05:48 AM

"gay" just seems to get bigger and bigger in its sweep...
